Checked Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, Target, major grocery store (Kroger Brand) . None carry it .


Anyone know what happened to Maalox antiacid? Have stores stopped carrying it? I see some online stores carrying it, but need a brick and mortar vendor.

This is for mom. She does not like Mylanta. She think Maalox does not have alcohol in it so it will be better because she says medications with alcohol have unpleasant reactions.

I am not sure if it's still produced for the US market. There appears to be no marketing website for Maalox for the US anymore, and the websites I found it on appear to be selling Maaxlox intended for the UK market.

I did find some old articles on google, and pieced this together.

Around 2010 Novartis who was making Maalox for the US market found itself in some hot water with the FDA over its product labeling, then in Dec 2011 the FDA shut the plant down due to serious quality-control issues they found, 18 months past and there were poor followup inspections from the FDA in regards to the plant, articles in spring 2012 start popping up about a Maalox shortage in stores due to the plant being closed, then around 2015/2016 Novartis and GSK seem to have struck a deal in which they traded some assets, and GSK took, Novartis OTC products well some of them.

No actual mention of Maalox being discontinued, but all the drug stores in Canada that used to sell it no longer do either.

Seems Maalox may have quietly drifted away.

You could try Walmart, or non chain pharmacies.

We have Mylanta at home, but moms thinks Maalox is more agreeable. She also trued the generic / house brand put out by Walgreens.

The link I posted should be for the Equate version of Maalox but if generics are no good then it's no use to you. Personally I use Prilosec once or twice a year for acid so can't comment on how well these work.

List of ingredients of this CVS house brand looks to be the same as maalox . No alcohol listed in ingredients. Hope this helps


Edit...I found the listing for maalox on Amazon, says it's made in Lithuania. Guess they did just give up on the US market for maalox.
