American Words you DO Like!

Is this going to be the shortest thread on record? We all have lots of gripes, but surely there must be some words or expressions that we like?!

I love the term "wrecker," far more evocative then "breakdown truck"!

It's true! The memory is indeed the first to go . . .

Well, I was correct about one thing, it will indeed be the shortest thread . . .

"y'all"... seems nicer than "you lot"

"I'm all set"

I guess you could like some words without adopting them.

I hate that word and never say it!
Not everything can be awesome, because where do you go from that? Nothing can be better than that.

Some things are not even awesome, they are not even that good!

Dude.

The way you say it imparts the entire meaning, anything from surprise to disgust to congratulations.

I like 'dude' too, but don't say it myself, I'd just sound stupid, and not keen when my kids call me dude either. I also like 'son of a bitch', was pretty funny when my MIL called my husband a son of a bitch a couple of weeks ago, it took her a few minutes to realise why were laughing.

LOL. I guess Brits have an affection for genericized trade names. :D

Can't think of even one. But I'm a miserable old cow this week who even told her daughter that we say sweeties and not candy. And we say "hello" or "hi" and not 'Hey" and we definitely do not say "awesome dude".

Note to self - cancel the sodding Disney channel from Sky.

Second note to self - quite like Manc's quote - but not in front of the kids.

 My PM entitled Hey! must have pissed you off then, sorry.

I like the word burglarize, just because it makes me snigger when people say it.

We're going away for the weekend and I told my daughter to pack a jumper, she had no idea what a jumper was:ohmy:

I used the word "lame" in class the other day and that raised a smirk from my (Scottish) students, so I think they liked it.

The longer I've been back (5 years now, after 23 years away), the fewer Americanisms I use, but I still find words like "lame" creep out now and then.

No problems for the title of a PM - don't think I even looked too much at that, more who it was from.
I meant more like greetings on the phone or in the streets or with friends and all this "hey" instead of "hi".

But as you know - anything this week would have pissed me off xxx

You mean "snicker", right? the first time I used the word above in class, I got some very shocked looks - I think because they thought I had used the N-word with an "s" before it.

We should all just start saying 'marathon' to really confuse everyone.

I seem to remember that too.

Of course, all chocolate bars were bigger in the 80s than they are now, I believe.

Creme Eggs were the size of a hen's egg, and Wagon Wheels were at least twice the size they are now.

Like I said, it must be a Maine thing :)

Though Main-ah is pretty common for describing the folks up in the nipple state.

As for words, I really don't like them, but do find using them an awful lot - Dude and Awesome...

Such as Dude, them Skanks getting beat lastnight, awesome :D

But it was seeing A-Rod bomb in the 9th and Big Nose thinking he almost got a winning homer :D
