Paul Ryan 'to rule out 2016 presidential bid' - BBC News

I'm not sure I ever viewed Paul Ryan as the white knight to come charging in to save the GOP anyway.

Kasich showing once again his relative sanity as compared to the other Republican candidates and thus confirming he won't get the nomination:

I think it is a wise choice on his part. He likely knows that getting involved in this cluster f@#k would likely damage him when it all goes sideways if he chooses to run in the future.

Oh I absolutely see him running in the future.

Isn't this like the third time in the last month he's ruled out running? People really don't believe him, like they didn't believe Elizabeth Warren really wasn't running for President.

One possible negative consequence (of many) of Trump's participation in this year's presidential race is that he will provide yet another excuse for the republican party to avoid changing their tune. Instead of facing the facts, and accepting they need to downplay their extreme policies (on women's rights, on immigration, on gay rights, on the environment ...), they can say, "it's not our policies that lose us votes, it was Trump's fault".

I mean, last time (2012) they seemed determined to soften their message on these issues, reach out to immigrants, etc ... but what do they come up with as their CHOSEN candidate to beat Trump - Cruz! Cruz is the embodiment of what is wrong with the republican party. Maybe it just has to get worse before it gets better ...

They do not want Cruz any more than they want Trump. All of their preferred choices were rejected by the voters. It is the parties fault for feeding the nutjobs for 8 years...now the lunatics are running the asylum.

Unfortunately there seem to be lots of voters who are okay with that

So what you're suggesting is the GOP should become Dem lite whose differences are separated by a different shade of the same colour and the millions of people who don't actually agree with abortion as a belated method of birth control or believe that illegal immigration shouldn't be rewarded with green cards are completely disenfranchised, thus provoking a potential break down of the political system and mass voter disengagement. Sounds like a boss plan... in North Korea

I think the GOP should keep doing exactly what they're doing. :fingerscrossed:

As is the case with anything involving power, the people most enthusiastic about taking part are the ones you least want to take part.

The only way to cure the Republican disease is to get ordinary conservatives involved more and to make sure that they don't keep hyping up the extremists as being good conservatives. With internet media it becomes an uphill battle.
