In real life you probably aren't, but anyone reading your crap posts on this thread would be justified in believing that you are as implacable an enemy of America as the Iranians. Nothing America does is right. For example, in your view as an example of our aggression against Iran we deliberately shot down an Iranian civilian airliner to kill Iranians - actually, if deliberate, amounting to a war crime. You really should think seriously about either moving to Iran or returning the hell back to the UK.
Thanks. |

I'm not a military man but I suspect the first priority of a ship's captain is to follow the orders of his superiors. I have no doubt that for a ship operating in the Persian gulf there are very explicit orders for engagements with Iranian forces and when it is appropriate to open fire or even to assume an aggressive posture. I doubt they have free reign to defend to the last man.
After Bush screwed up by invading Iraq and toppling Saddam the Iranians saw an opportunity to stir up things even worse by backing a corrupt Shi'ite Iraqi leader who alienated the Iraqi Sunnis. Eventually this disenfranchised group was the core group which founded the Islamic State which we are now all having to deal with. Under any other circumstances Iran deserves ISIS and it would serve them right |

It was hard to tell if the soldiers were doing that because a gun was being held to them, or if they adopted that pose themselves because they accidentally strayed into Iranian waters and they wanted to show from the start that they meant no threat.
The videos were released as propaganda, of course, but there was nothing in them to show that the sailors were mistreated in any way. It looked like protocol to me. That is about the most 'Murican thing I have read all day :D |

Sometimes, it's best to let the kids have their tantrum. The Iranian leadership is divided, and is not a monolithic group of either hardliners or moderates. The sailor incident is a bit embarrassing, but not fatal.

Nah! Dropping to ones knees isn't part of military behavior when surrendering, not in German, British or American tradition anyway. They were ordered to kneel for the propaganda video
The video was propaganda, that's as may be, but this looks more like the classic 'I'm unarmed' pose that one might adopt when a lovely American policeman is about to gun them down for having a tail light out. |

They weren't surrendering though, no act of war was taking place. I also have a hard time believing they were forced to do so at gunpoint as well.

I was stopped last week for having a brake light out on my truck. I was very politely notified that it was not working and was not even given a warning to get it fixed. If it had been a lovely American police woman I would have been temped to get out and kneel at her feet perhaps |

No it isn't. Raising arms above head where both hands can be seen is good enough, always has been.

If the roles were reversed, the redneck choir would be singing the War Aria again, you can be damn sure of that. |

As a propaganda video I prefer it to the one where a C-130 off loads coffins draped in flags.
Iran was once a close ally of the US. Why is there such an aversion to working towards that end once again? |

A far better question to ask is why did two American ships enter Iranian territorial waters? Did they both break down? Did one go to rescue the other? Why is the US conducting "exercises" so close to Iranian territorial waters as to risk this kind of incident? Of course the blow hard crowd would rather scream and shout ... |
