It's bad but the people in the comments under the article seem to think it's for every bag.
I wish they would get people to check everything and not have all that crap in the overhead lockers.

Sally Couldnt agree more Nothing worse than people trying to bring oversize baggage on board. Slows the whole process down
No one ever seem to check the carry on baggage size although they have gauges set up near the counters
I'd go with free checked bags and nothing on board that weighs more than 5lbs. or doesnt fit in a plastic bag. Kids stuff excepted. Over 5lbs $100 that would stop the nonsense It would also make security a lot easier

One time we were next to a woman who had brought on such a lot of carry-on that she had it all stuffed around her feet and body, it must have been incredibly uncomfortable.

Just to clarify:
First bag is still free.
Second bag fee is raised from $70 to $100.

Indeed. I always used to pack a spare bag inside my first bag specifically to stack it with English goodies on the return journey.

Re: ***United Raises International Bag Fee To $100***
It's just another sour point on United for me. Seems like the merger has only just begun and yet their reducing the benefits of flying with them (well Continental as far as I'm concerned) and just trying to squeeze every last penny, taking away the things that made me still fly with them.
I have a mere 50,000 miles left to use up, then I'm done with them and going to switch to using BA back to the UK. I no longer do the sime miles I used to and now the majority of it is within the US so the chances of me reaching Gold or Platinum and taking advantage of internal upgrades is slim.

We fly with the new "United" on Wednesday so will see how it goes. Everyone who I know that has flown with them after the merger says they were terrible. I was never that impressed with Continental so am dreading United. Sadly for us they are the only carrier that flies Newark to Manchester direct.

I'm struggling to see the problem with this.
There's got to be an element of deterrent built into this fee. If too many people bring one bag over their allowance then this translates into strains on hold space and airport infrastructure and impacts both handling and fuel costs. While many airlines are well known to gouge passengers at every available opportunity, this one seems to me like a measure to control demand while covering costs rather than an income stream generator for them.
All pure speculation on my part though.
