Default Garden International School, Rayong

There are adverts for jobs at this school which is in Rayong, about 2 hours out of Bangkok and 45 minutes from Pattaya.

Does anybody have any information about:

Working at this school?
What Rayong is like as a place to live?
If not Rayong, where would you suggest?
How much would a 2 bed apartment/house cost per month?
What is the lifestyle like there (I am guessing pretty slow paced, with not much to do other than eat out and walk - go to the beach)

Thanks
Victor

Don't know about Rayong - never done more than a day trip there (and I'm going back about 15 years ).

As to teaching though - are you taliking about subject or TEFL? If you are a qualified teacher/have a teaching or other degree and a TEFL (can get TEFL here), then best bet is to apply to international schools, they often don't like to hire locally in Thailand (too many K.S.Rd degrees) and hire abroad. Wages can be high for Thailand (60k - 120k probably)

Next step down is Universities, (top) colleges and private schools (bi/tri-lingual) - they will hire locally, but will usually require relevent degrees. Wages are likely to be 40k upwards.

At the bottom of the ladder is Thai schools, state schools, temple schools and language schools. These will often take you (illegally) with just a TEFL or native English - don't expect much better than 20k though, unless they are desperate (boonies).

Good place to look for info is Ajarn dot com. (Ajarn is specialist teacher/professor) - Kru (pronounced "crew") means teacher.

I taught at university here for a year a few years back (4 years ago I think) - kids are great, courses not so great, conditions/class sizes/resources erm...

Best paces for suitable qualified teachers is Bangkok or Chaing Mai as these places have the most schools (we have a school here with over 8000 students - bi-lingual).

Rayong city hasn't got too much going for it really . It's quite an industrial area too . The Map Ta Phut estate is there and there have been a lot of articles in the press about the pollution from there.

However , if you go up the coast a bit there are some nice beaches very popular with Thai holiday makers and of course Koh Samet is very east to get too from there too . Ban Phe Pier is about 15 minute drive from Rayong and Samet is lovely . A bit busy at times but a very nice place for a weekend break etc.

It is a nice place , bit of a ripoff that they and try and charge you to go into a national park when the main beach is full of bars and resorts though . Worht noting that it is free for all on King's Birthday / Queen's Birthday holiday days ect .
