Default Teaching in US

I would like to teach in the US, however, if a H1-B visa does not have a starting date until October (of any year!) how would I stand for teaching in that academic year. Would I have to wait until the following year and start in the September or do they employ teachers at the start of any semester as they do here in the UK.

Anyone come across this problem?

I'm about to have the same problem. I'm going to be starting to look for a job in May, so I'll let you know about my experiences if anything relevant comes up.

Good luck!

Have you started to teach in the US yet? How did you secure your visa? I am thinking of relocating to the states I would like to teach there, any advise would be great.

I posted here a while back and got a few pm's so this is one of my replies that may help...if you are coming to NY as its different everywhere so it seems !...its a long one !!!!

yeh its pretty hard teaching here if all your teaching/degree etc is from england...but heres a few pointers hopefully helpful !

If you havent got an american hubby you will need to get sponsored to come over here...my school is transfering some teachers over and i think on the j1 visa scheme....are you primary or secondary ? You could always try my school british international school of new york...brand new school private in manhattan first and only british one here...looks pretty good(am now there and its great and def need more teachers !!) and they will be growing so will need more teachers soon
there are a few other british schools i think in washington and boston
have you heard of ... i cant remember whats its called its always in the times ed ..i think its vis or something just about working in schools in states cant remember, look in the times ed

I tried the public route but its impossible as there is loads of red tape and they are the rudest department i have ever had to deal with - ny ed department...
Basically they say they have a reciprocal agreement but then say its only if you teach shortage subjects so if thats you you may be lucky look on the ny ed website it gives you the info...doesnt mention the shortage thing so it took me a good few months and going to local council member who went to the top to get that info !! so I gave in as I just wanted to teach and then this came up in the private sector so i thought what the hell !
If you decide on NY most private schools seems to ask for you to be ny certified anyhow....(at first i thought i didnt need to but believe me ive researched this !!)...so you have to sit 3 4hour exams and do a couple of workshops on child abuse and the like....but also they have asked for proof on some of my uni modules for instance they say they cant see where I have done literacy...even though i have "english" modules all over my transcripts !!....so I have had to call and email uni to try and get them to send me the descriptions of all the classes I took...when all the above is done I should be certified so I may then look in the public sector not sure ...
So basically thats all for new york and each state works very differently so you may want to decide where you want to go first and start making calls

With all that in mind I love it here and I've been nannying while ive been waiting so alls good

oh my hubby was transfered here if you were wonderin so i got a l2 visa so the visa thing isnt a issue for me

Hope this helps...

You have responded to a thread started in 2004. It's not likely you'll hear from the OP.

If you really are planning to get a teacher for your son for one term, which US visa are you getting for the person?

hi, I am a PE teacher from the UK who has been looking into teaching in america since Jan and its doing my head in. Did you find a job and then move to the US? or did you just take yourself out there and then find a job? WHo are the people who can help me with my credentialing? Its just impossible because to find a job you need a visa and to get a visa to work in the US you need a job!!! Do you know any schools that have any PE jobs? I am highly qualified!!! Please help!

Cheers stacey

Did you see my reply above to someone else....it is a nightmare unfortunatly...there is no quick way to get in....are you senior or primary ? Try the private route as you wont need to be NY certified...but you still have the hassle of a visa....maybe try the vis system...you can work for a year I think or more with them they specialise in it...they always advertise on eteach...My hubby was already here on a L1 so I had it easy on the visa issue...some of my collegues are on J2 so maybe thats an option but not sure how you would get that as they are more 'consultants' ...anyway read what i wrote above and if you need anymore info pm me...good luck and get ready for a long old journey !!

I could name 20 more who tried and failed ...
unless your here already ..on another visa ..

J is no good for long term ...
It would have to be an H1 ...and very few school can afford the cost of that .
Plus the US is not short of PE teachers ...
Gotta face facts ...

She doesnt say how long she wants to stay tho ?? Also it doesnt matter if the us doesnt need PE teachers for the private sector as long as they can apply for a J visa for her....or she could do the british expat favourite- just marry an american !!!
