I'm not in a rush to find work, so I guess I'll just keep an eye on the one in my area and see what happens.

Do you know if you need to be registered with the Queensland College of Teachers? I'm just in the process of doing that right now, but it will take a few months. My guess is that it wouldn't be needed but it'd be nice to know with a little more certainty.
You do not need to registered with the Queensland College of Teachers to work in a TAFE but see my earlier comments regarding the Cert IV in Training and Assessment.
Good luck.

Would everyone need this regardless of their education background? I do have a 4 year Bachelor of Education degree from a University in Canada.

I have no issues with taking a course, I'm just wondering if everyone needs it. Also, if it is required (which it appears to be) would it be helpful to have it before hand or would they have no problem if you took it after you were hired?

Everyone teaching at a TAFE is required to have the qualification. A TAFE is a vocational college, as such you need a qualification which provides currency as an assessor of vocational qualifications.

I had a similar qualification in the UK but would still have been offered work if I didn't. However, I was asked to complete it as it was a requirement for continuing employment with the TAFE.

My boss has an MBA and a Masters in Education - and he had to take it (even though he no longer teaches).

If you have time on your hands try and do it now as it would be looked favourably on if you are serious about working in a TAFE.

Well that may be an option, but I'd hate to cough up almost $2,000 without any prospect of employment. You said yourself it is difficult to gain employment. I don't need to work, it would just be nice to get out of the house and also add to our savings.

I understand the need for it, although I find it odd that an entire program or certificate is needed. Particularly when an Education program covers all that. It is what it is though.

Technically I do have time now although I have two small children at home (ages 3.5 years and 1 year old) so it would really depend on how the program is offered. If it's run during the days then I'd also have to pay for Childcare for two small children.

I'll look into it although I might just end up being a teachers aide or getting a regular teaching job once my teacher registration comes through. It'll just depend on what pops up. I just can't justify spending that kind of money for an equivalent certificate when I don't even know if it will lead to a job.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I'll keep an eye out anyway and see if there's anything interesting.

I have a PGCE in post 16 education and a couple of years experience teaching adults in the UK, one working for a TAFE equivalent - however I have decided that it will just be a lot easier just to do the Certificate IV as it seems to come up on all jobs both at TAFE and private. You can do it via distance learning if you need to - as I want to get out and see people I'm doing doing the 10 week 1 day a week version - but am astounded at the cost $1400 - my PGCE was free!

The only problem I have now is that I need to have my teaching assessed so will need to have access to a course to teach but hope that once I start the course I'll be able to sort something out - other wise I'll be on BE offering a free computing course!

By APU I assume you mean RPL or APL. If that is what you mean then the short answer is "no". You will have to go through this process in Australia.

Has anybody got any advice for me please - I have been to the EXPO at Leeds today and after considering QLD for all this time I now am considering Adelaide. I am an IT teacher who teaches in a sixth form college and teach A levels, I have taught in the psst pre GCSE, all levels of ICT, adult classes and also am teaching Key Skills level 2 and 3 at mo!!! Anyhow does anybody know my chances of getting a job in a TAFE college - SA???!!!!! When I did my PGCE I also completed my D32/33 (12 years ago), bloody didnt go to pick the assessors cert up tho doh!!!

So does anybody out there work in that environment or similar job role. Thanks
Emz
