A teacher needing advice about getting a permanent visa
Hi there -
At present, I have been living in Japan for the past 3 and a bit years working as an ESL teacher at various high schools.
In July, I will move to Sydney as my Japanese boyfriend is living and working there. He has a temporary 4 yr working visa.
In the end, we would both like to apply for and (fingers crossed) get permanent visas there. Due to his occupation (tour guide for Japanese tourists) it's unlikely that he would be able to get a permanent visa on his own. So the onus is pretty much on me.
As an ESL teacher, my job does not feature on the SOL List so I couldn't apply for PR through the standard work sponsorship way. My only options seem to be to try and get an ENS visa or re-train as a primary / secondary teacher and get sponsorship through my future school.
How easy is it to get an ENS visa? As an ESL teacher, I wouldn't think that my occupation would be in such high demand. There must be many Aus / NZ citizens already there who hold the same qualifications as me. (CELTA qualification and experience - who already have PR)
If I re-train as a primary / secondary school teacher, at what stage can I apply for permanent residency? Immediately after my course? Or do I have to get 1 year's experience teaching first?
Any help would be really appreciated.

Not sure about the ESL.
However new changes for September 1st, regarding students and getting them to stay in Aus once qualified. Basically think they want to encourage students to committ to Aus.
Id have a look at the Aus Immigration website and read the new changes.
It may be worth trying for teacher training and then getting PR this way.
GEMS
Ps, think Secondary is more a shortage area. So research before choosing what age range.
