Hi,

I'm currently doing my PGCE in secondary science. I'm planning to do my NQT year and then move out to Australia. I was wondering how easy this is to do and where to start? How long does this process usually take and will I need sponsorship?

Any help would be much apreciated, thank you.

Sponsorship will depend if you have enough points for a visa -http://www.immi.gov.au/
You need to check that that you can pass Teaching Australia's criteria ie 4yr degree or 3yr + PGCE - GTP does not qualify.

You cannot apply for a visa until you've been vetted and passed. I know nothing of WHV (working holiday visa) and if you can do that with teaching but make sure that you read pas posts particularly in the teaching section of BE so you can get to grips with some of the policies and the lingo used on here and the market place.

YOu won't need sponsorship if you have the points independently - current pass mark is 120 but it might change. We had to teach in the UK for 3 years to get a bonus 10 points for work experience to get over here.

Occasionally some states do sponsor science teachers so you might be in luck there, people are always asking about getting sponsorship from a school- I've never heard of anyone being successful.

I meet the 120 points requirement without needing sponsorship fortunately and the registering with teach australia seems pretty straightforward. Does anyone know how much the visa will cost and how long that usually takes to organise once you have been verified with teach australia?

To get the skills assessment from TeachingAustralia will take between 4 - 8 weeks (ish!!!). Costs $450.

Once you've got this you can then lodge your 175 application, which can take between 4 month to over a year to be granted. Usually around 5-8 months if you're from a low risk country (like the UK). Costs $2,105

Thank you that's really helpful. How easy is it to apply for the 175 visa? I was hoping to do some travelling before I go over and so was wondering if I would have to be in the UK while my application was being processed?

Whilst your application is being processed you can be anywhere. If you are in Australia when its granted you just need to leave the country so it can be granted and then you can return.

The 175 visa is more expensive but you don't need sponsorship from the state, can do any work you want (or no work!) anywhere in Australia instead of being tied to a school for two years in WA.

In case you're not aware... after getting your visa (fingers crossed) you then have to register with the dept of education in the state you want to teach in. This can take another few months and cost a couple of hundred dollars (exact figures depend on the state)

Its free to register with the Department of Education in WA, then you go on a free three day induction course to be allowed to work in state schools :)

It's free in WA??? :eek: Why don't they put an ad on the tv? I'd have gone there long ago...I'm just getting ready to pay my Qld Teacher Rego which is now $85 because I didn't pay before Dec 31st (because I was trying to exercise some positive thinking and by not paying I was putting faith in the hope that I would NOT STILL BE HERE for the start of school *sob*) Perhaps all the daytime telly is sending me mad???

You might be confused between the Dept of Education and WACOT.

Dept of Education allows you to work in state schools, usually after attending an induction course and period of assessed teaching in schools (10 days in WA). This is all free.

WACOT - WA College of Teaching which you have to register with before you can teach anywhere. This is $70 a year.

oh the department - yes, free to register with them here in Queensland too. Just have to pay QCT first...
