Question Referees

DET are asking for 2 referees, one of which should be your current headteacher. As I am a supply teacher I don't have a current head although there are 2 schools that I teach at a lot. Would it be ok to get referees from these schools rather than my supply agency and my other question is, would a reference from the deputy head hold as much clout? I ask this because at one school I work closely with the deputy and she would be more able to comment on my teaching...could I put her as my first ref or does it make no difference which order you put them in???

Hi Claire,

One of my references was from a dept head rather than the headteacher; for the same reason as yours. It was absolutely fine!

We also used a reference from supply agency when dealing with payroll.
So a reference from them could work too.

Clairepeet - why dont you go back to DET and ask them? They will tell you what they will accept or not, as the case may be.

I think you have to ask yourself who will give you the best references! I had a supply teacher working with me long term and he was given a good reference from the Headteacher but I purposely passed on many good pointers for the Head to consider. Ask your deputy to do the same by passing on your strengths, but def get the Head's signature. Will the Supply Agency be able to provide a better reference than your University Tutor?
Best of luck.

I wasn't going to get one from my Uni tutor as that was 13 years ago and I thought would be a bit impersonal. Was just going to put down the Deputy Head as my 1st ref (she can comment best on my skills) and the Head of the other school as my 2nd. Hope these are ok!
