Default The Older Teacher

Folks,

We are presently gearing up to apply for migration Down Under.

We have both taught in Oz previously and lived there for a year on exchange so have a good idea what its really worth. I teach DT and ICT and my wife is Primary/middle school trained

On the current points index we are at 115 (I'm 42) so can I ask:

1 Are we missing a trick on the Ind Skilled Visa application?

2 Am I right in thinking that the Vic sponsorship program is still actively recruiting.

3 Is the WA program being put on hold - and at 43 soon am i right in thinking we've missed that boat.

4 Has anyone, in a random moment, considered the NT and are the conditions of job offers there different with regards to permanent residency visas?

5 New Zealand would seem to be an option also - with potential access to Australia in the long run. Has anyone followed this course of action?

I know that I pose a few questions on a range of topics but any response would be welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

Bezza

If Secondary teaching goes on the MODL, you'll have the points. My OH says that you can do 176 (state) with Vic, SA and NT. Worth speaking to an agent as they can provide sound advice - search on BE and see peoples views. We are using an agent as we have had some issues that meant it was slightly more complex and couldn't always guarantee time to it.

Good luck,
Cooler

Dear Cooler,

At least we can reply to each other's questions even if no-one else does.

The WA isn't a goer as thought - 43 next month.

Best option is state sponsorship - am aware of the Vic programme but not of NT or SA. Any info greatly appreciated.

Are the point for the MODL about to change?

Keeping NZ as a long shot for now.

Cooler,

SA Skilled sponsorhsip 176 doesn't seem to list teaching - or is it me?

Link on - http://migration.sa.gov.au/centric/m...led_occupation

Has the occupation been removed perhaps?

No, you're correct, OH and I are tired I'll blame her as I always do though

It's on the 475 which is not worth it for us. We're going for 176 (family) as OH has fair bit of family there and that makes up the points for us.

It does seem to be quiet on the teaching section, I'm sure I've seen tumbleweed! It does not appear that many teachers are going to OZ or don't post on here.

Re my points about an agent, a good one is worth it, they know what they are doing. We are using Ian Harrop as he had good experience of our particular issue. They have been excellent and very professional.

G'day mate,
Cooler

Dear Cooler,

What are your thoughts?

For us we can't go temp because by the end of the two years we'll be too old to apply so thinking is get PR first. 115 points on gen skilled at present!

Vic want DT/Manual Arts for the 176 but new list on Monday!

NT want DT/MA but list is from 2008

ACT do a 176 - for me it would be IT as a subject. I have been a HoD ICT for 7 years, Data Manager and Director of Assessment and data but my qualifications are more DT based. Not so sure about success.

TAS don't have my subjects or a real demand but offer some sponsorship.

SA, NSW, QLD and WA - no option

Are there any other options we have missed? In addition we would then be faced by finding a job etc.

Thoughts?

Secondary school teacher is on the new 'critical skills list' isn't it? I don't know much about this new thing but I was under the impression that all the occupations on that were also on MODL. have you looked into this?

Apologies if i'm wrong, as I say I don't know much about the current regulations, it's just an idea.

The CSL, as far as I can see, impacts on processing times not points!

It might change and it would be good to know more about the list and its potential impact.

From Geroge Lombard on the CSL thread (sticky)

"These changes will not affect the eligibility of applicants who are currently eligible to apply for General Skilled Migration now to be eligible after 1 January 2009. However they will not be given processing priority. There are no changes to the points awarded for MODL."

Guess not great news.
