It's always amusing to hear people saying there is not enough legislation for landlords - whilst I am trying to assess whether an Indian passport and work visa are genuine or fake.

Indeed - the government should be putting more efforts into expelling the circa 3/4 million illegals rather than just making accomodation difficult.

I'll let the effort to get a rise pass for the moment, only to add that turning citizens into cops, setting them to turning each other in to the authorities, is not the mark of the sort of society that I want to be part of. It needs changing.

I agree, we need more immigration police focussed on this issue, not joe public.

Is that all there is? 750,000?

That's pretty good.

Maybe we should get ID Cards. Whether national or on a student / working visa, everyone has one.

Wholeheartedly agree on that. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.

This is the UK. They'd probably issue them in Latin, Gaelic, and Middle English for Rees-Mogg......

Roll up! Roll up! Roll up! Only 6 weeks to go, get them while stocks last!

Single kitchen knives are the most frequently stolen knives, Asda said, prompting the decision to stop their sale by the end of April.

Knives and scissors have a security tag on in supermarkets in Australia. You have to prove you're over 18 and if you try and steal, the alarms go off. I only found out when I was buying a pair of scissors and going through Self Serve, machine beeped, check out dude came over to press buttons and asked if I was over 18. The fact that he'd been round for dinner the previous night as he was dating my 20 year old daughter at the time didn't mean he could get away without asking.

Putting 2 & 2 together (& risking 5!) I suppose knives (in this store anyway) are not tag protected, although I recall things like razor blades are, if so I wonder why not?

I don't think you can buy razor blades in supermarkets here. Only place I've got them from is a hardware store I think, not 100%, only bought them a couple of times in the past 13 years. Maybe chemists? Not sure. I imagine some people still use the old fashioned razors that need separate blades and I can't imagine they have to go to Bunnings (B&Q type place) for their shaving requirements.

Hmmm, that's an odd one, certainly get them in supermarkets (etc) here.

Interestingly knives of all sizes & types (& I mean all) are freely on sale here but knife / violent crime is mercifully rare. I don't know if it is still true but it used to be de rigeur for men to carry penknives (as many small boys used to in the UK).

In Hungary (according to the last Police report) the biggest bunch of criminals are the pensioners!

I now feel the need to put razor blades on my shopping list and hunt some down. I may, or may not, report back..........

moneypenny20 out of interest is that down to legislation? Or is it an anti-theft measure? Either way, good on the dude for following protocol

I seem to recall some proposed legislation changes being kicked around in the UK following the rapid increase in knife (and acid) attacks, but that was a year or so back? I have the feeling that the razor blade thing is mostly as an anti-theft measure - like for higher priced alcohol - it's been around quite some time.

Edit: looks like I've crossed posts, sorry.
