Default The Queen's Edinburgh palace is looking for a housekeeper. Minimum wage salary

Queen Elizabeth II's palace in Edinburgh has 289 rooms — and the Royal Household is looking for a part-time housekeeper to keep them up to her majesty's standards. No previous housekeeping experience is necessary, but the job advert stresses the need for a "proactive approach" — as well as a willingness to work for the minimum wage.
The pay for the 20-hour-per-week job is £9.50, or the equivalent of $12.96 an hour. That reflects the U.K.'s new minimum wage, which will rise from £8.91 an hour now to £9.50 an hour in April.

That article in CBS is ridiculous. The job advertised is not “housekeeper.” It’s for a “housekeeping assistant.” It’s obviously for an entry-level post, so while minimum wage is not a great incentive for anyone looking for a living wage, it’s probably realistic.

A part-time cleaning job that requires no experience is always going to pay minimum wage. I’d be interested to know how much they think the British taxpayer should be paying.

$12.96 is quite low for any job, and considering who the employer is I would expect better.

$12.96 .. so United States dollars. What does that have to do with the local situation in Edinburgh, in the UK?

I thought it was generally known the staff are low paid. Think it’s supposed to be a privilege to work for the Royal Family…or at least for the Queen.

Th article gives the hourly wage in pound sterling and dollars. I feel $12.96 is too even for the US, and cost of living is lower here than the UK.

I didn't know that about Royal family staff wages, but have been reading this is the case. It just surprises me, because if you pay low you will find it hard to attract quality workers, but I suppose they think high quality staff will still flock to work for the Royals for the caveat and resume?

Well I agree, it’s paltry. But it’s just a part-time, no-experience required, entry level, housekeeping-assistant job. Probably used to be a “maid,” but that would be a gendered term.

Given what might be discovered through this particular position I would have expected "not the usual pay level" as an incentive to maintain confidentiality.

This thread reminded me. A classmate at hotel school (HND) landed a "lowly" job at Buckingham Palace -Pageboy or something- 25 odd years ago. The class was quite jealous/impressed! I lost touch. I wonder where he is now, Trying to remember his name.

Made a typo in the reply you quoted, it should have read : $12.96 is too low even for the US . But the typo doesn't seem to have mattered in you figuring out what I meant to say

I'd take it for the benefits

The job comes with 33 days of paid vacation — compared with about 10 days of paid vacation on average for American workers — and a 15% contribution toward the worker's retirement account.
And when a promotion or transfer to another Royal home becomes available, I'd definitely consider it. But even as a job for experience for a couple of years, it's going look impressive on one's resume, especially given the number of stately home in the UK.

Working for the Royal Household brings benefits that can't be bought for any money, so if that floats your boat its definitely worth it. The end of year staff Christmas Party for London staff used to be a ball at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle - I got to go one one year as a plus-one. Was huge fun!

If you work in housekeeping for a few years, it's great on your cv if you want to work in a high-end hotel or other hospitality business.

Yes but left over roast swan every day can get a bit monotonous and drinking Chateau Rothschild by the pint eats away the liver something awful.
