Regarding all the recent posts about Trump and his taxes ... did I miss a major story here? I thought he was successfully hiding his tax returns till after the election? Has there been a leak?

NYT seems to have gotten tax records. They wont provide the records as to protect their sources though according to the editor.

I couldn't access the NYT article itself, but I can access the editors note at the above link.

Actual article but need to be a subscriber.

As I understand it, US Presidential nominees have usually voluntarily released their tax returns, of which I believe Trump was the only one who refused in 2016. I believe media outlets such as the NYT have been trying to get for the last four years....

If you believe he is a multi-millionaire. Personally until I see the facts, I don't believe a single word that comes out of his lying mouth,

He probably is a millionaire... I'd suggest that he likely uses little of his own money to finance anything (it's probably in offshore accounts), and that banks any other wealthy people 'invest' in his businesses.

The BBC reports much that's in the Times article but without the payroll.

All that I know; so how did the NYT get them, that was really the question. If they got them in a manner that is not legal, Trump can just deny their validity.

NYT claims they obtained them legally. Which of course they would. Then again I would grant them Public Interest Immunity, along with their source, even if it turned out they were obtained by nefarious means.

And that never happens.

So is Trump alleged to have broken any taxation related laws?

I think you misunderstood my point. I don't care if they were obtained illegally. It was a public good.

The same way Edward Snowdon performed a public good despite breaking a good number of laws.

I'm not a tax lawyer, so I can't speak to if Trump has broken any laws.

The interesting thing is that the NYT is very specifically saying "tax return data" as opposed to "tax returns". I suspect that's a significant choice on the part of the NY Times. As to where they got this info from, I can think of two obvious possibilities: Michael Cohen or Mary Trump.

But you're assuming this un-named source information is true.

If Edward Snowden performed a public good, do you see it the same way with Julian Assange? And if not, why not?
