"Nothing we didn't already know," said Grassley. But that doesn't preclude much - we already knew on the balance of probabilities, if not beyond a reasonable doubt, that Kavanaugh was a serial perjurer and sexual predator.

It's quite clear that, even if the sexual assault allegations cannot be substantiated, he lied under oath to the Committee. It's plain as the nose on your face that he told direct untruths about the nature of the "devil's triangle," "FFFFFFourth of July," "Renate Alumn[i]us," and "boofing" references in his high school yearbook, multiple times. Sure, they're trivial things, but if he is prepared to lie about such trivial "absurdity" (his word), how can he possibly be of sufficiently robust good character to serve on the Supreme Court?

The Democrats complaint is that the FBI has had its hands tied by the White House....

The fact that he lied under oath, and his hyper-partisan rantings during the hearing alone are enough to suggest that he is not suitable to serve on the Supreme Court, before we even get to his sexual offenses.

Why the hell he didn't just step down to avoid this even being a thing is beyond me. ****ing slimy twat is just doubling down on his slimy twattedness. **** this administration and all who are responsible for it.

Because he's such an entitled prick, he thinks this is his destiny and anyone trying to stop that is all part of some Clinton fueled conspiracy.

You just know he's dying to scream "But I'm WHITE, goddamnit, leave me alone" as he sizes up his next victim to run a train on.

Presumably as he wants the position. If he steps down, he doesn't get it (yet?) and if he doesn't step down, it's fixed so he gets it regardless.

Is the position worth the confirmation to the world that you're a smarmy, sleazy, serial rapist? Oh wait, he is a republican, so those are the minimum party membership requirements.

Unless and until he gets impeached and found guilty. And although I think he could never be convicted by the Senate, the probability that there will be impeachment hearings the next time the Democrats hold the House is pretty high.

Exactly.

Even the way he conducted himself at that hearing should have given quite some doubt as to suitability.

One would like to think so. But the bar has been lowered so many times since Trump came to office it seems that standards are not a requirement anymore.

As said today by retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Pretty unprecedented for a retired justice to say something like this:

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/04/polit...ens-kavanaugh/

Stevens is a Republican appointed to the Supreme Court by Gerald Ford.

With the way Trump has behaved - from before the election, some of his pronouncements, the outrageous mocking yesterday, shoving the PM of Montenegro...I wonder what would happen if the world's leaders insisted that their dealings with the US be conducted with other representatives and just boycotted any meetings at which he was present. Don't invite him to any summits.

A slippery slope? Or a one off?

Whilst I wouldn't particularly support what seems to be the USA Republican views , I do think that there will be many lovely decent people out there who would choose republican over democrat for all manner of reasons. Rightly or wrongly.

I'm mindful that many in the UK Midlands ,which was a working class hub , supported a conservative movement over socialist views and I feel we are still seeing this today.

One would like to think that those of a republican leaning would be thinking twice and thrice about this particular 'administration' & be dismayed and disgusted about how they as people are being represented.

I simply cannot think that the braying that we see at Trump rallies for instance represents all republicans. Surely some somewhere must be aghast.

It is those that I would like to see stand up and openly be counted and say no, this admin. is not what we stand for.

For the sake of the world really, I hope they do.

The present administration has raised the question of how much are republican voters prepared to put up with, before calling foul. My understanding of what percentage of people can be considered decent has changed to a much smaller number. The words "decent people" even has cultural over tones that makes me uncomfortable. The Pearl necklace, Sunday coffee morning crowd, and it's American equivalent, are sometimes rotten under a facade of decent middle class values
