Default Not Priti Patel

Priti Patel is becoming quite un-pretty with her bizarre and nasty commentary. Lord help us is she is re-elected with Bozo the clown for a five year term.

Here, in a sweep, she absolves central government in its duty of care for the poor. Quite unfathomable. Daughter of Thatcher? It's a slight even on Mrs T.

Considering May fired her for corrupt and dishonest practices, she has no business being in the Cabinet again.
Heaven help us if BoJo resigns/retires, and she puts herself up for leader of the Tories or dare is say it PM (just because she has a top Cabinet post and she's Asian so it's good PR to have a non-white major party leader/PM).

BoJo isn't retiring for another decade, whether he gets re-elected or not.

Glad to see you are sticking with the forum Nams, despite a slightly rocky start.

Most of the decent Tories were ejected by BoJo, but they're not all nasty.

There's no such thing as a decent Tory.

(OK, I'm just being awkward, but what else did you expect a County Durham coal miners son to say).

Does anyone up there, with the benefit of time, think that it would be better if the coal mines were still operating (now)? Just wondering.

I honestly cannot give you an informed answer Shard. I've lived on the south coast since 1989 and only go back to visit family once or twice a year. But just remember that a lot of the people who were employed in coal mining are now dead, so the issue no longer has the immediacy that it did.

Ok ok. I agree it doesn't have the immediacy and many have gone to that great coal pit in the sky. Was wondering in light of all the recent environmentalism, clean energy, Greta Thunberg, wind farms, etc.. Maybe those communities have retrospectively come to understand the decisons, hard though they were at the time.

Considering now we have 2 or even 3 generations living off benefits and the effect on social conditions and families, yes most people I come across in North Eats would have preferred the mines stay open.

Funny in the North East considering things still blamed on Thatcher one would think she were still alive.

I don't think that many who were directly affected at the time will ever understand the decisions taken or forgive those responsible. Heseltine, for example, now being lauded as one of the rehabilitated and decent Tories you mentioned, presided over much of the economic misery inflicted on the north east.

As, I think, Lion has said, it shows how far to the right the Tory party has lurched

It wasn't just Thatcher (I've already mentioned Tarzan Heseltine) and not just coal mining either. Steel, shipbuilding, Alcan at Lynemouth, jobs in the textile industry, even some of the new businesses that were supposed to cushion the blow of losing traditional heavy industry, have all struggled and been decimated in part by government (mainly Tory) policies.
