Fair play. They've got banter for a bunch of loons.

Breaking news from the BBC, the Pentagon has just confirmed reports of an explosion at Kabul airport. And so it begins (again). The poor people.

Re: Afghanistan

Until the situation improves around the airport, Canada is done evacuating people for the time being. 8,000 seats applied for, 5,000 processed, and 3,700 evacuated to date. Some may have already run, and the rest have been told to keep their heads down. On the news there was mention of fear of a terror attack against an evac flight, and I dread to think what that could mean in carnage and in repercussions. For the Taliban it isn't a simple choice; if they can't vet who gets out they risk freeing some who would actively oppose them from abroad, and if they only allow foreign nationals to evacuate, they will find the countries whose interpreters and families are blocked less willing to legitimize them.

Because that's what matters, not the fact that people, including children, waiting for a chance to escape are now torn apart bodies.

They are the ones that control what happens, stories of US troops moving out, other participants leaving as they can not operate without US presence.

We (US and UK) have again assisted in completely destabilizing a country. One group of right-wing religious lunatics being attacked by an even more right-wing, more lunatic group of religious lunatics, and the poor Afghans, normal, ordinary people, are getting killed. Again.

Re: Afghanistan

The only surprise here is that it took so long to start because I doubt this will be the last before 31st.

Personally I expected an attack on the airfield itself using mortars etc. or a bomb smuggled onto an aircraft to be detonated in flight..

To my uneducated mind, this atrocity may very well be viewed by those who're managing the evacuation as one of the lesser events that could have taken place.

This might seem a callous assessment, but it'll emphasise the need to end this quickly, especially from the viewpoint of Mr and Mrs Average US voter.

It's clear that the targets were US servicemen and presumably anyone queuing to leave the country will not have been considered to be innocent victims by those who detonated the explosives.

We can only lay blame for this at the feet of the bombers and as they will have known any security would have been a nightmare to deliver and as such this was the softest of soft targets but one offering high value.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend and the Taliban might very well become a very good friend of the US as time passes and groups like ISIS become a permanent irritant and threat and the US would do well to cultivate them now that they better understand one another.

Re: Afghanistan

The Taliban are not a cohesive group, seems their senior members have multiple memberships.

I doubt there is much the Commanders on the ground can do now, they are leaving anyway.

They were dealt a bad hand.
