According to Sir Desmond Swayne MP (Con - New Forest West), we're full up.

I sense a general feeling of agreement amongst certain quarters on this forum, although apparently that's not something that's evident amongst the UK population at large.

I guess we'll be operating a turnstile at all the ports of entry in the same manner those Covid traffic lights or their equivalents operate in some stores, ie on a one in one out basis.

Only 3rd time CRAF has been activated, first one being in 1990/1991 then in 2002-2003 and now 2021.

Airlines really don't mind it, they sign up for it and in return get military charters that provides decent revenue, and crews tend to like charter flights as they tend to pay more $$.

Note that the US civil aircraft will not be flying to Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, but to the temporary safe havens and interim staging bases, UAE is likely one as I know some were flown there, maybe Oman as well but they are not going to be flying into Kabul.

Not a good decision on the part of the UK.

Seems the US did the opposite with their guards which is good, but UK needs to do the same and not leave them stranded and not use the stupid loophole of they didn't work for us, yes technically correct, but these people still put their life in danger for you, and UK still paid their salary although indirectly, and I am sure the UK can fit in 100 people somewhere.

British expat GardaWorld operations manager after informing the guards they no longer had jobs, left the country back to the UK the next morning.

I think it is a more popular sentiment in the population than most would like to admit. I know we all want to be seen to be super compassionate and welcoming in situations like this but I reckon more people would secretly say they don't want 20,000 Afghan relocated to the UK than would publicly admit it.

It's NIMBY-ism at it's very, very best - both locally and nationally.

Another good article from Haaretz. Afghanistan a festering swamp of corruption with $3trillion of mineral reserves that China and Russia have their eyes on.

Tell me about it. I was at some people's house last evening where people were talking about Afghan refugees and "suppose they bring in the virus". As though Covid weren't running all over the UK already. People are very disappointing sometimes.

Unbelievable, on both counts. The virus? How could that even be a factor, when it is endemic in the community? And 20,000 people! They could settle in one small county - one big town! Without being noticed. Plus, they mostly look like people who would be good neighbors, and “good for the economy.”

I think the problem is that most of the Afghans don't wear red trousers or splutter about the BBC.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/23/asia/...hnk/index.html

One reason for the chaos was the decision to issue electronic visas, without names or document numbers, to SIV applicants. The visas were then copied as screenshots and sent by Afghans to thousands of other Afghans who were not eligible for access to the airport, a source told CNN at the weekend.
"I don't think consular, or the administration frankly, realizes how badly they f*****d up by sending that stupid visa and letting everyone in for 24 hours straight," the source said Monday.
Wow

I give those people some credit though - at least they're honest.

Lots of people would happily see them not allowed in. Those who would let them in don't 100% want them living next door though.....

I suppose it depends where. Cities are more cosmopolitan and used to first generation immigrants in a way that Winchester is not.

Also, you are far too young to wear red trousers. OK, now that I've said that someone who looks about 14 just walked past me on the train, wearing them.
