Yeah, well. I probably had a bit of an unfair advantage, what with rigging the poll and all that.

Someone else had definitely better do the next one or I might accidentally rig it in favour of revoking Article 50.

I had forgotten that. I think he would fit in very well in the Commons.

Just out of curiosity, what concessions would you have to have seen Cameron obtain?

He adopted the typically British approach of "what are you going to do for us?" instead of "what can we reform / improve for the benefit of all members" and so failed.

Having said that we have heard many calls for reform - with precious few suggestions of substance.

Anything to show that the EU wasn’t hellbent on continuing its self-chosen path towards becoming a federal superstate.

But Cameron did negotiate an opt-out from 'ever closer union'. But actually, closer union in the EU context isn't an EU superstate;

So for example, one of the main EU treaties currently refers to:

“the process of creating an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe, in which decisions are taken as openly as possible and as closely as possible to the citizen”.

Notably, the treaties actually say “ever closer union of the peoples” of Europe, not governments. The phrase does not contain the word “political”, and it uses the word “union” with a small u, less suggestive of a formal drive towards a European super-state.

It’s also important to read the phrase “ever closer union” with the rest of the sentence. This links ever closer union, as the original draft of the EU deal stated, with a desire to “…promote trust and understanding among peoples living in open and democratic societies…”.
Whether the EU was planning on becoming a federal superstate or not, each EU member state's head of government would have had to agree to it, and the EU Parliament pass it. And as it would have involved a Treaty change, every single EU member state holds a veto, and a single veto stops it. Here's the FT take on it. How do you revise the EU treaties?

So yet another thing the UK public is told to be scared of, that it wasn't going to be a part of unless it chose to.
