I would say YES. Bring rugs. Make sure they're small enough to shake out or beat occasionally because yes they do get dusty. I find them a comfortanle and warming especially under my feet where we sit., or under your computer chair.

I got half a dozen rugs from IKEA and used them in the winter, you could stick them in the washing machine :)

They looked like this but I don't know whether this one is the same. (Malaga store).

Do you think I should bring some carpets with me when I move then ???

Take some long johns and sheepskin slippers too. One of our Spanish neighbours used to stay in fleecy scotch plaid PJ's until mid-day and he was only about 45!

I think some of our Spanish neighbours put theirs on in November and keep them on all day (including going to the local shop) until March at least - hopefully not the same pair but I don't get too close just in case!:lol:

Hi

Is there anything else that you would think is important to bring that I might chuck ?

Its getting so close it is really starting to worry me now, I am just so disorganised the logistics are eating at me :(

I have bought myself 17 days to complete the move, but I think maybe I should add 15 more, i.e take the place a bit earlier, the landlord will do that, they just need 14 days to get services put on and finish it

I miss everything that I didn't bring that I now need. Tools especially that I car-booted thinking I'd done with all that building/renovation stuff!:( and I wanted to save on the removal costs. I should have spent extra money on removals and extra money to build a shed to save loads now!
Don't forget to fill a box with tea and anything else you're really going to miss. good luck! Enjoy! I love it here and wouldn't go back even though we're totally skint! Today my English student's Dad brought me a big bag of vegetables and another friend who's computer tablet my husband fixed in no time gave us eggs because my husband wouldn't accept payment. I was financially richer in England but in every other way we're richer here and
sometimes the throwaway comments of some on the forum Andy make me want to distance myself even more! ;)

I did the same, my husband thought me mad at the time but now sees the wisdom of doing that. :)

This is starting to look like Scott of the Antarctic, but I'm sure you can do better than that Andy.
Why not bring along a Sledge and a team of Huskies, you can always eat them if you get snowed in.
Oh and a decent pair of wellies and oilskins as well for when the Gota fria strikes, though before it's finished put a bit of firewood to one side in case you need to start building an Arc.
You can either live in a house on low ground and risk getting flooded as is oft times the case in Spain or get one on a hill top as I did and wait for the chimney to come crashing through the roof when the big winds come in. ;)

Re: Would you go back to the UK ?

I'm an expat reading this topic having lived here in Cape Town for 30 yrs and now looking to spend the SA winters in Spain so my answer to the topic title is no I wouldn't go back to the UK to live as I think the weather would kill me! Having been used to long summers for many years it takes something to get used to days of grey clouds and rain and that's only summer!

I do, however, always enjoy going back to England to visit family & friends but the plan in the next few years is to spend hopefully 3-4 mths in Spain with the odd trip to the UK and then the rest of the time in CT and if Spain is the place I'd like to be then I would look at living there permanently but will decide this after a few years and I'll hopefully get some good advice on Spain from this website!

As Concierge for the Spanish section of BE I would like to say hello and welcome.

BE is a very large expat website, so if you have problems finding your way around we have concierges who will try to direct you. The moderators for the Spanish forums are Mitzyboy and Fred James, moderators are there to ensure that the site runs smoothly within the rules of BE. Problems and complaints should always be addressed to a moderador who will look into the matter and deal with it efficiently and fairly. Our members who post in the Spain Forums are friendly and helpful with a wealth of knowledge of the issues of living in Spain. At the top of the page you will find a quirkily named thread called Free Beer which is full of important and useful information. Hope you enjoy your time participating in the forums.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Rosemary

That sounds like a really good idea. I have a friend who is South African but lives in northern England. She visits SA regularly and loves her home but finds the winter (now) there very cold. Now is around the time you would be here then I'm guessing. And yes, you'd love it. You'll get good and bad information on here so take everything with a pinch of salt and a bucketload of good humour. ;)

I have never regretted coming back but do hate the darkness in winter in the UK. We came back in December 2011 and hadn't been to the UK in winter for eight years and I couldn't believe it was getting dark at 3.30! Then it wasn't light until after 0800 and never really got properly light. So, ideally I would like to spend December (the darkest|) and January (the coldest) elsewhere.

As mine and my husband's birthdays are both in January, that means always spending Christmas and birthdays away from home. :)

I watched Restoration home last night. That's what we did and where we did it. Even the same street! And when I left our lovely restored house there I cried, but we needed the money for our project here. As we watched we kept seeing the greyness and the bleakness of winter and remembering our battles to encourage a community spirit which is already here in Spain. Weighing it all up we're so much happier here...even though we're still building and I crave living in a finished house again!

I don't like dark days. The UK should take Europe time. Doesn't get dark that early but the sun sets in December around 4.20pm it was 6.15 where we lived in Spain. If we hadn't pets I would spend a couple of months in the southern hemisphere. Always take a holiday by the end of November but only for 2weeks and then one in January. Although we always got out of Spain in Dec/Jan too:D

But then Brits couldn't be so proud of being the center of time for the rest of the world. One of the few things left of the empire, I reckon.

But I agree. I like the light in Spain far better than the UK or Germany. Any time of year, but especially in winter.
