I used to love it in the 50's when it had great atmosphere, and to a child was an alladins cave, but have used it very rarely in the last 20 years.

As far as I can remember Wollies started to decline as supermarkets expanded and started selling more than general foodstuffs, many of the type of things that Wollies where selling. Woolies management never adjusted to compensate for this and I guess that being one of the main reasons for it's closure.

Woolworths have seemed rubbish for years. Wilkinsons do what people need. I read a woman journalist last week who said she couldn't even buy some new tights from Woolworths. I read elsewhere that someone used to buy singles from Woolies, but when the market changed there was nothing else to get from there. Woolies tried to attract the cds/dvds market, but people could go to HMV or WH Smiths (or even Amazon) for this type of stuff.

Now announced that they will not reopen after Christmas with a loss of 27,000 jobs.

Reminds me of the very old joke about the naked woman running round Marks and Spencers, when asked why she was doing it.. she said.. ohh sorry I thought I was in Woollies...

Went in yesterday and it reminded us of one of those disaster movies where the stores had been left deserted for years, stuff strewn over the floor, shelves empty .....

Our local Woolworth store is the oldest one in Wales is going to be the first one closed.
I know they have not kept ahead of the game in this competitive market but will be missed.
This store was established in the 1800s in the centre aspect of town
Went in today people quite tearful not only staff but bargain hunters as well( Small community town that employs 80 to 100ish people)
I know it will make a difference to the town.
After the closure of the pits and linked heavy industry closures
No work around then a quite depressed time.
It still survived only to fold now in the 2008 crunch SAD
:(

I read that during the closing down sales the woolworth staff have been verbally, and on some occasions physically, abused as the goods on offer were not cheap enough!! Poor buggers. As if it wasn`t bad enough losing your job at Christmas. If it was me I would be telling all the vultures to eff off (and more) - what`s to lose?
