You did, but that's old news....now the administrators or other vultures, having not sealed a deal for the whole business, are (a) preparing for a closing down sale (b) just wanting to be rid, not as a whole enterprise. (if I understand it correctly)

Trouble is for Woolies, much as we all love(d) them, we never spent any money there. They haven't had a business for years other than nostalgia.
A real shame. Lots of tack but also some really good stuff. i particularly liked their garden plants.

I agree, I never spent much there, but it has stood proudly in the centre of our town for over 50 years.
Town will look awful with this large store shut in the centre
Our town centre the stores are all struggling to keep going as we have an Asda and Tescos & B&Q on the outskirts taking business out of town. The recession is definitely making it difficult for the smaller shop keeper beginning to bite in UK

Very sad.
Only a few items of the very limited range was reduced by 50%,much of it only 10 or 20% off.
Most people were very disappointed with what was on offer, but thats been the problem for many years.
I remember when walking into the local Woolies was akin to stepping inside of Aladdins cave.
I even have a handed down pane of glass from the front of an old Woolie store ,"everything at 6d",.....(just over 2 of todays pence which is probably now worth more if weighed in at the scrapyard, after Gordons latest,..."I saved the World fiasco")
Probably the huge influx of cheap Chinese goods into other cheapie shops over the last 20 or so years has been the last straw and finally knocked the business on the head.

Come on guys, OK Woolies is a true British institution and it´s sad to see it go but, and be honest, when was the last time any of us bought something there when we lived in the UK?

Tescos have cherry picked a few stores for their Tescos Metro Stores and may take a few more, Hoever I think that is the end and 30,000 jobs with it. Their book/Video delivery outlet is a good business and will either be saved or kept as a separate entity.

Not really correctly.

Woolworths has failed because it tried to be too many things to too many people, fairly limited lines of all things, when you could go to a supermarket or superstore and have much more choice, and, I'm afraid to say, cheaper items. I used to love it in the 50's when it had great atmosphere, and to a child was an alladins cave, but have used it very rarely in the last 20 years.

Walking down Tonbridge High Street this morning in the pouring rain (4C and the coldest December here in UK since the early 70s!)
ELEVEN shops, not counting Woolies, closed in the last 3 months!
