However I must admit its even worse than I expected.
As I understand it the free upgrade applies to Windows 7s and 8s and is available free of charge from July this year for 12 months only, so I hope to be taking advantage myself.

Re: Windows 10
Dick I rently purchased a cheap laptop for holiday travel with Win 8 which immediately updated to 8.1
It's terrible
However it may be better on a touchscreen device?????
I will update the laptop and try Win10 before parting with Win 7 on my home PC.
Does anyone know if you will be able to reverse a Win 10 upgrade?

Microsoft may define an overall spec for Windows 10 such as processor and ram.
But what about drivers and program compatibility?
Personally, I would only upgrade to a newer version of Windows if MS said something like ' If a PC is designed for Windows 7/8, it will defo run Windows 10'
I got caught out with Win 95 to 98 - so an old sceptic!

I am of the same opinion as most so far. I bought a new laptop last year but decided against Windows 8 and 8.1 as my family gave so many negative reports. I chose Windows 7 Home Premium which I like very much. The advice I have received so far viz a viz Windows 10 is to leave the upgrade as long as possible in order that any problems can be sorted - so I'll be looking again in June 2016.

Re: Windows 10
This option is to perform a System Image Backup of your existing Windows Operating System (Vista/XP/7/8/8.1) prior to upgrading. This creates an exact duplicate image of your current Operating System PLUS important Windows Recovery files, should these be needed. I think this is good practice to do regularly, and in fact, I do this after every major update to Windows which Microsoft send out - so I've always got a reliable, up-to-date backup to revert to, just in case my PC hits problems, or any critical Operating System files get corrupted.
Once you've created this disk image, save this to an external hard drive. Then, you can always restore your C:\ drive (boot drive) to this if you encounter any problems. If you're running Windows 8 or 8.1, then it's very easy to create this disk image via Control Panel > File History > System Image Backup - this last bit appears as a small hyperlink in the bottom left of the Control Panel window.
Personally, even though I've registered for the free upgrade to Windows 10 (currently I'm using Win7 Professional on my PC; & Win 8.1 on my laptop), I'm going to delay upgrading until at least 3 months after the official Win10 launch date of 29th July 2015, as there will inevitably be bugs and other issues which need to be resolved. As my PC and laptop are business critical, I cannot afford the risk of a complete system failure.
