Just curious, are you wanting to move to either Spain or Portugal, or are you asking about Brits in the the two countries for a research project?

Ban on dual nationality? What ban? By who? I have dual nationality and live perfectly well as a fully legal resident of Spain.

Also, if you're not a Spanish national, and have only 3000€ per year income, then not only do you not meet the 800€ per month per person minimum income requirement to be granted legal Spanish residency, but you simply shouldn't be here. Full stop.

The OP has also posted several questions in the general Europe forum, on behalf of a friend. It's surprizing that he didn't mention the latter's specific issue in the Spain and Portugal forums....

However, in those cases whereby Spanish citizenship is acquired by a foreigner through naturalisation, the applicant must renounce the previous nationality.
If you managed to get Spanish nationality via naturalisation and keep your previous nationality or nationalities I am all ears.

It's well known that the required "renouncement" has no effect on your UK citizenship.

What exactly is renouncement? And why it has no effect?

Being British is not something you can renounce. (I would assume its the same for other countries as well)

In Australia if you are/were a British citizen and became an Australian Citizen, if you then wanted to enter politics you are supposed to renounce your britishness. BUT the UK does not recognise this and will just send your UK passport back saying its not possible to renounce.

This is fact as my Daughter has tried... Her Australian in laws were quite surprised.

The only route you have is to not renew your Uk passport, does stop you being British though.

Any proof of that from a reputable source?

My understanding no personal knowledge not something I have or would do. To obtain Spanish Citizenship you will have to renounce any other citizenship as Spain does not recognise dual citizenship. I believe most people say they have but don't necessarily actually take the formal action to renounce it? To say you can't though renounce UK citizenship per government site is incorrect not sure how easy it is but it can be done.

I hold both British and German citizenship. This is neither "banned" nor is Spanish citizenship required to live in Spain.

The fact that Spain does not recognise "dual citizenship" is irrelevant.

How is Spanish or dual citizenship relevant to living in Spain? Or Portugal? It's not relevant at all, and shouldn't even merit any consideration in choosing between Spain or Portugal, or Fiji or Timbuktu.

Aside from Spanish citizenship providing automatic right to residence, it's much simpler to apply for residence in the normal way.

Obviously, achieving Spanish (or any EU member state) residency will become quite a bit more burdensome for British citizens starting next year, but its still attainable if you meet non-EU residency requirements. But even that *does not* require obtaining Spanish citizenship, which is much more difficult than becoming legally resident, no matter what your nationality is.

Continually discussing citizenship on this thread is really pointless. You cannot apply for citizenship until you have resided in Spain for 10 years and this means that you have to have the residency certificate as proof of this status.

So please get back on topic.

I agree Rosemary however once it had been mentioned if there are inaccuracies i.e. You can't renounce UK citizenship? You can and other points needing clarity surely that should be clarified?
