Why are the expats returning to the UK?

Why are the expats returning to the UK? Answer: they've heard the millionaires are moving out of the UK, and they think there'll be vacancies!

I'm trying to think of the last time I had a British born neighbour in the UK. Currently one side is Dutch, the other Asian, and the people opposite are from the Carribean. Go a couple of years back and my neighbour was Polish.
Maybe the expats moved to Spain to get away from other Brits, found they were still in a Brit ghetto, and are now moving back so they won't have to live next to another Brit

Worth pointing out too, that not a few Spanish are moving to the UK to start up their own business, as the initial outlay is far smaller in the UK than in Spainn.

El Pais have been running a series of articles about the state of young people in Spain at the moment - in particular following those abroad who have moved to the UK, Norway, Germany and Switzerland.
The message was loud and clear. Most of the young Spaniards who went to these countries had good degrees but were unable to get a good job in their area, so often ended up in bars, cafes, factories and cleaning, as one said, getting paid less than I would have been in a bar in Spain
Yes, some people make it, I know quite a few who did when I was in London, but the majority will be back in Spain in a year or two's time. The key was moving to the country straight after graduating and being fluent in the local language (where needed) and English.
Unfortunately, now even the graduate jobs have been drying up in London and many of the Spaniards who move there are pushing 30 with no experience. Therefore in English eyes they are unemployable in a graduate job

That might have been your reason, but not mine.

The stories about millionaires leaving the Uk have been around forever, they never do, infact investment is pouring into London.
Don't encounter many foreigners around here...one actually in the whole village. Depends where you live. No shortage of romanian company on the CDS

Interesting topic. My husband and I moved here 9 years ago, when we were 29 and early retired!
We have had a fabulous time living our life here, first on the Costa Tropical and now in the Costa de la Luz.
Over the years, we have travelled, changed, grown up, and started our family.
As much as we have loved it here, for us, we feel we would love to bring our children up in a nice part of the UK, and have the opportunity to grow up near cousins and grandparents.
We are now looking to sell up and move back and the amount of people who tell us we are mad (those living in the uk) are driving me mad!
However, i think it may come to it, that we will end up keeping our property out here, that we own outright, and buy a smaller property than we would have liked in the uk with our savings, as opposed to selling here and buying there.
We are giving ourselves until our children are school age, so have a few years yet, but would like to be settled by then.
So many people think brits move back for bad reasons, but there are many, i am sure, who, like us, want to move back for good reasons too.

Palmera, Yes family ties and familarality. Sometimes priorities change when you have kids. Nice for them to meet family and young cousins etc. Nowhere's perfect. just what is perfect at various times in your life.
We felt the pull although it wasn't the only reason. Being back I realised we missed a lot.

jackytoo, it surprised us how much we changed in ourselves after our children were born.
How long have you been back? I know when we have gone back for holidays we have really enjoyed ourselves, and i think it helps we never left the uk cos we didnt like it, we left to experience life in another country.
we're going back for 5 or 6 weeks this summer and really looking forward to it.

A very accurate and truthful picture, sad but true the Spanish bubble that popped, too much debt that fueled illusionary property valuations.
There are Brits that have left and gone back home, many of them were working for fellow Brits doing work such as property maintenance or building, plumbing, lots of the estate agents have closed shop and left. The work dried up but the bills kept getting bigger.
Some are still there usually it is the ones that have been living there the longest, their home paid for and their outgoings few. Others are splitting their time between the UK and Spain, earning some money in UK then coming back to live a few months in the Sun. It is not easy at the moment depends on how far you can make your money stretch and if the frugal lifestyle is something you can handle. Of course there are the few that have no money worries life goes on the same for them.

Yes a vicious circle, the more that left the less work for the others. Know a couple in property management who seem to be doing well. They look after most of the properties in their apartment. If that's the sort of work you want. They have nice cars and do cruises so they must be ok.
I know a lot of elderly who have, or want to return. Some after the death of a partner.
