The main cities in the Alicante areas all have professional renting agencies with proper offices and staff, rather than websites which are often well out of date. When you visit them they will note your exact requirements and show you properties that are suitable. Everything is done with legal contracts and safeguards for both the owner and tenant.

They are invariably Spanish run, but will have English speakers on the staff.

There are also many dodgy agencies, often run by expats, often with only a web presence, so you need to be careful.

Most Spanish people rent rather than buy, often for their entire lives, and the system is much better than back in the UK.

That may have been true 50 years ago. I have never met a Spaniard who didn't own there own house until the present crisis when many have lost their homes as well as their jobs .

Absolutely. I read a report recently that said the Spaniards are the biggest home owners in Europe, even bigger than the British! Something like 80% of Spanish families own their own house, compared to only 50% in France and Germany where there is a stronger rental tradition.

Many Spanish families own their family own and then a second home that they rent out, maybe in the Costas

Spanish people love the lottery and the housing lottery, gives them the best chance to become rich "a golpe" (all at once). That's one of the reasons why there are so many empty houses in Spain. People bought them as an investment hoping that the prices would go up, they dont want to rent them out as the tenants by law get a 5 year contract and they may damage the property.
