Where to buy a hat?

My son #1 is getting married next summer and I thought for a bit of fun I'd start the search for a showstopping hat (not that I want to upstage the bride of course:sneaky:) with dd who's over for August. Nada! Not a whiff of a hat apart from floppy straw things or fascinators in 17.8 million varieties ready for fiesta. Don't hat shops exist? Malaga's my preference, but anywhere within an hour or two would be good......

Re: Where to buy a hat?

Don't you have any of those little independent boutiques that sell wedding clothes? They always have hats to match. There are dozens of them where I live and given the fact that there seems to be umpteen weddings every weekend, each with 500+ guests they must do a roaring trade!!

Or El Corte Inglés of course but I don't like them much.

Corte Inglés? Plaza Mayor? Dunnes "La Troche", Coin?

El Corte Ingles, certainly the one out the other side of the motorway near the feria ground, did not - I was amazed. Floppy straw things and endless fascinators, yes.... Plaza Mayor (well the new bit, anyway) nada. Began to lose the will to live hence the thread! Googling turned up one in Malaga centro, which will be my next attempt but it's worth hearing from anyone who knows of one!

Re: Where to buy a hat?

yes, you surprise me about Corte Inglés. I would have been sure they'd do something. I assume all branches are more or less the same, so not worth trying the one in Mijas/Fuengirola?????? cos that always seems to have a lot of "posh" stuff!!! Theres a Dunnes near there too and the Miramar Centre?? Maybe a bit of drive from you tho

Yep, there's the Corte at Mijas, plus central Malaga. I'll try Miramar plus El Ingenio at Velez Malaga plus maybe Larios Centre, etc etc., but given that not one shop at Plaza Mayor nuevo had any 'posh' hats, I doubt the other malls will.....and I'm pretty sure Dunnes don't so I'll sit tight & hope someone can mention another one or six independents (haven't forgotten the Coin suggestion), then I'll save 'em up and do a trawl around sometime 8yo isn't in the car!!!!

or of course there's always EasyJet to the UK specially, but it'd become a damned expensive titfer:rofl:

Hat shops exist but it is not tradition in Spain to wear a hat at a wedding, so you may struggle to find one that will be suitable

Go to a wedding clothes shop! Surely there must be some where you live. Don't people dress up for weddings where you are??

Re: Where to buy a hat?

I wouldn't bother with El Ingenio at Velez-Malaga, I've never seen hats for sale there apart from the sunhat variety.

The nicest I've seen locally are at shops called Dia y Noche, they have one in Nerja in the Plaza Cavana and one in Frigiliana on the main street through the village (I think the Nerja one is a bit larger). They sell mostly (very nice and reasonably priced) costume jewellery but also hats and bags.

I expect you'll have to go to Madrid or Barcelona as I've never seen guests at Spanish weddings wear hats except in Hola magazine .

Wouldn't take the risk of not receiving it...please let's not wander off topic, but stuff just doesn't arrive where you expect it to in these parts. ....besides which I've got a big head (:o) so wouldn't take the risk of something not fitting either:rofl:

Having got married in Spain, there are loads of wedding clothes shops here. Eg. El Corte Ingles or Pronovios (I think that's what it was called).

But as I said earlier, Spanish people dont wear hats to weddings!

¿Qué? No replies?

Of course, the OP, fionamw, is entitled to wear the black mantilla and peineta at her son's wedding (as long as it is not a civil ceremony, I think, need to check on the protocol...)

She may even walk him down the aisle. However, all this might upset the bride, especially if the wedding takes place in the UK!:sneaky:

Here's a link which may be useful to fionamw (scroll down the page for info on the mantilla):
http://gloriacallealta.blogspot.com/...-espanola.html

and another, for a laugh, or perhaps these things are taken very seriously? Apologies to those who may feel offended by what may be seen as flippancy:

Black mantilla? Don't make me the suegra negra too soon:p
nb the wedding is in the UK, and I think reasonably formal so a hat is still required!

:D If the wedding is before 12noon, you may wear a mantilla clara - or at least a shade different to that of the bride's veil. How about a coloured mantilla to match your dress?

 Yeah, but not half as much fun as starting the search early on! Best wishes!
