In that case I seem to remember that you fill in this form

in duplicate, 2 copies of your ID (passport), photographs I think? and hand it in at a suitable police station. Sometime later you will pick up one of the forms with your NIE written on it.

I have just compared the form on the govt website to the one I completed 6 years ago. Now the space for NIE has been replaced by passport number, so I am not sure how they notify the NIE now.

Check the 'Free Beer' thread ..BUT.. it does seem that indifferent plaes they do translate the requirements slightly different.

No, it is just a unique number that the Spanish govt requires for a lot of important and sometimes routine transactions. It identifies you. Imagine that Paco Crespo Lafoz or John Smith isn't much use to guarantee identity.

It's basically like a social security number, and once you have one keep the papers very safe as it lasts for life, and in many cases you have to show the ORIGINAL
