Default What the hell did i see?

On the way to Granada to pick my brother up from the airport, suddenly i was on the breaks on the motorwya and went past a convoy of colourful carriages being pulled by tractors. there was loads of them. The carriages had like a balcony and there were people in them, they were stood looking out or having a meal, glass of wine or something. The carriages looked really nice, very colourful and decorated.

They were being police escorted as obviously 10mph on a motorway is a litlte slow compared to the rest of the cars. They turned off just as i was getting to them, then later on i saw some more coming down the other side.

Anyone got any more info on what i saw?

Looked soo cool.

Hola!
Just a guess:
The El Rocio pilgrimage? (big fiesta on the weekend before Pentecost Monday, 28th May) Google it.

Carol

Well amiga, you just missd one of Andalucias spectaculars.

There is a massive pilgrimage every year to El Rocio just west of Seville when over a MILLION people from all over Andalucia descend on a tiny cowboy town to celebrate the miracle of an inebriated shepherd who had a vison.

Apparently he was on his way home and found an effigy of the Virgin in an olive tree, he decided to take it with him. when he woke after a short siesta, hot sun, bit of wine maybe, the effigy had disappeared and was found later to have returned to the tree from whence he took it. A miracle!!! Well a good excuse to give the wife for being a bit late home that night anyway.

As a result of his vision people now come for a week long romeria arriving in all sorts of carriages some pulled by horse some by donkey or mule or even tractor. They sing and dance and drink as they go and have a massive party all the way. All dressed in their sunday best with the girls in typical flamenco dresses and the boys dressed up in smart suits showing off on their horses.

Rather like the carnivals in the caribbean it is a great way of meeting people from other parts of the country and spreading the gene pool around a bit. Stopd them getting inbred.

Well sorry but you have just missed it and need to wait till next year but it is fairly fantastic and if you can you should try to get there even for a day if you can.

Hope this is of interest.

Hola!
Yes, Steve is correct, or perhaps it was a huge jeepney convention?
Here's a description in english:
http://www.andalucia.com/festival/rocio.htm
or, in today's edition, in spanish:
http://www.huelvainformacion.es/94196_ESN_HTML.htm
Look on the telly for the old spanish film "Camino del Rocio" with Carmen Sevilla.
Canal Sur apparently broadcasts the religious event on Monday morning (28th).

Carol

And if you fancy buying a house in one of the neighbouring villages you can make a mint. We looked at one while considering the region around Huelva..the old boy had been a footballer. We were told that during the pilgrimage one could rent the house for about 12,000 Eu, enough to pay the mortgage for the rest of the year. You must be prepared to have several families occupying simultaneously, sleeping in every available space.
We decided we preferred the Cadiz region.

About 50 of the caravans pulled by tractors etc, right through the traffic at peak time, glad I was walking.
No one on them though, I think they were just getting them to the start line for later.

Went into town last night and we see an elderly gent leading two donkeys covered in flowers, they were pulling a cart that had been decorated and was carrying the most amazing candalabra. It was gianormous and it looked like solid silver, there where no candle in it but what a site it would look when it was all lit up. The Spanish lady we were with said that it was on its way to meet up with others on the pilgrimage, made me feel all warm inside it was lovely.
