Re: weather
When I flew out of the UK last Monday it was Minus 12, Today here I am in Alhama de Murcia, the temperature is 8 degrees and quite a strong breeze (well pretty windy actually :o ) but compared to Britain it's positively summery... I had breakfast on the terrace...out of the wind.. It's paradise. :D:D

Re: weather
A beautiful day here in inland Andalucia.
I'm sat inside with all the windows and doors open after having lunch out on the terrace, it was too hot for me to sit in the sun for very long. The nights are going quite cool still at around 3c and a couple of nights down to zero.....but we are quite high up and very close to a mountain at the back of us. |
Re: weather
Thanks all, reinforced my determination to get out there ASAP

Re: weather
Well I must have become very Spanish because it is bloody cold to me. Even in the sun the wind cuts to the bone. As for night time I have bought a pair of pj´s the first since I was ten years old. Would prefer UK though colder the house at least has central heating. My granddaughter was on skype earlier in a dress with no sleeves whilst I have thick jumpers on in the house.

Never worn pj's either, apart from when I had to borrow some to go into hospital!;) Sat here now, just a shirt on, nothing on my feet, toasty! I think like you, there's some very cold Brits in Spain tonight, just they aren't as honest as you. I went out this morning early for a couple of hours, came home for some lunch, then my wife and I went out walking again for a few hours. Despite what some would have you believe here, life goes on without wall to wall sunshine, in fact I doubt many spend as much time outdoors as I do, enjoying the surrounding countryside. Bil used to be at the computer all day churning out over 40 posts telling me how brilliant the weather was outside.
Well I'm perishing inside the house, but to some extent it's our own choice as to what house we buy, what insulation/heating etc we retro-fit, how much we research the likely ambient temperature/humidity/wind speed, not to mention altitude. With that caveat, I'd say the weather is still more pleasant because of the sun. We see it much more, and much more predictably, than in the UK even if every day isn't 42* and toasting sun. And as has been said, by others too, I for one miss bil so :p |

At the moment it's the tiled floors that feel the worst, I must get some sheepskin lined slippers for next winter as the cold is coming right through the ones I'm wearing.....but only a few weeks to go and it's going to be much warmer! I miss Bil too, I wish they would let him come back |
Re: weather
We will never understand the Spanish & ViceVersa.
Yesterday because it was freezing inside the house (even wearing thick jumpers) we sat outside, and before long were stripped down to t- shirts in the warm sunshine on our terrace. Our neighbour comes out all wrapped up in her well padded house-coat and scarf to hang her washing and tells us "we must be mad" I asked her "why? it's much warmer here than in the house" She went back in shaking her head and eventually we were forced back inside by the choking smoke from her chimney:rofl: Why do the Spanish people insist on spending the winter freezing in the house and will not consider sitting outside until July? And then do nowt but complain that it's too hot, while we spend our time cooling off inside? |
Re: weather
A lot of times I feel colder in the house than outside. This is due to the poor construction of these houses with no insulation at all. You think that the govt tries to conserve energy by introducing solar & yet they allow builders to build such poor quality houses with NO insulation.
The weather in this part of Spain is cold enough to need good insulation houses to conserve energy. |

The Spanish building regulation specify thermal insulation in all houses and have done so for the last 10 years. Our house has cavity walls with 4" of foam plus an air gap. The roof is also insulated. |

Re: weather
Actually, based on average temperatures in Spain this week, its been colder in Spain than the UK!
It was -7c in the city of Granada in the daytime. A big chunk of inland has been between -10 to -20c at night. Every winter there is a lot more snow in Spain than there is in the UK Just goes to show that the Brits live in a tiny part of Spain that is sheltered by the Coasts |
Re: weather
living in Northern Granada Province, 20k N of the city.
its b****y Frio here at the moment, nights to -4 days to be lucky to reach +15 but the UK will be lucky to get a 5 degree change night/day. definitely not enough to warm a Spanish house filled with marble and ceramic wall & floor tiles. Even cold on the terrace in the sun at this moment. Don't know about Fred's insulation, it doesnt feel as if any generated heat is being retained, just goes straight out of the walls and windows. And very few Spanish houses have any form of heating so the electricity bill goes up and up, along with the weekly visit to replace the butane bottle. look forward to the +45 we had out here last summer............... |

Those I've stayed in, in the North of Spain during winter are perfectly warm and insulated The ones down in the South and on the Med Coast are freezing though! |

Ummmmmmmmmmm well that is another regulation that has been ignored.
People do not seem to realise how the regs have changed since the 90's. When we built our house we had to supply concrete and steel samples for each stage of the build which were tested (at great expense) to ensure that the specification had been met. Independent consulting engineers were involved all through the process and this was essential to get the mandatory 10 years garuantee on the house (again at great expense). Then there was the mandatory geological survey with core samples drilled all over the site and of course the seismic risk analysis - I could go on! |

I was in UK at the time so didn't see what went on...you can find him on Facebook. :focus: I'm freezing sat here, off to sit in front of the fire for a while, I'll be happy when I'm saying once again that it's too hot! |

The weather in this part of Spain is cold enough to need good insulation houses to conserve energy. Therefore, it is understandable that the houses in UK necessarily are better insulated, of the same way that also I understand there is scoundrels builders save money by making lower-quality homes than could be But is my opinion |

went out with the dog at lunchtime and looked at the construction of some houses round here and No Insulation. Just a concrete pour shell and the usual thin terracotta bricks full of holes for the walls, one wall, nothing on the inside. no wonder I am so cold in the house I have to go out for a walk to warm up |

Re: weather
You won't see the insulation going in. They usually spray PU foam onto the inside of the wall and then build another course of bricks or board in front of it.

Perhaps that's why to this day they are still unoccupied. |
Re: weather
For those of you with insulation, do you feel warmer & does it help to reduce heat loss?
|

In theory it is bound to improve things but to what extent depends on the individual house. |
Re: weather
Well if the Gulf Stream was to switch off we would all be permanantly much colder even here in Spain, and if we could live at that temperature walk across from France to UK, just not sure if the Bay of Biscay would freeze over to allow a walk from Spain without going via France.
