Unless you're happy to live on the streets, camp where it's free and legal, you would still have to rent to have a roof over your head. If the cheapest rental is 300€ a month in your area and you are living mortgage free, then of course it has a value, maybe even a personal value.

According to this latest report, Spanish property is a one-way bet (upwards) for the next 5 years, after 10 years of difficult times

I suspect he's only really talking about vibrant cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Time will tell though.

So it all looks very rosy, as far as Bernardos is concerned. “After the dangerous decade (2006 – 2015) will come five marvellous years (2016-2020),” he claims. Investor interest, and strong economic growth in Spain (around 3%) will “finish off the hangover and carry the real estate market to a new period of growth.”
Bernardos is bullish despite concern about the global economy, arguing that the international situation will be “compensated for by an increase in Spanish household spending and company investment, especially in construction.”

Not so much an obsession, more of a problem in London. Property prices are ridiculously high forcing people further and further away. I can see little benefit in skyhigh prices.
eg:
3 bedroom semi-detached house for sale in West Avenue Road, London, E17, E17
Bonkers!
I do not see Spanish prices going anywhere in the short term.

My goodness - my very first property was just along the street from the house featured in the link !! I bought mine for £48k in 1980
