Last time we had UK insurance (our car was registered, taxed and MOT'd in the UK; we had it matriculated to Spanish plates before all these things ran out) it was with Saga and they told us that we could take the car out of the UK for as long as we liked, it would be covered. I presume they meant assuming the MOT and tax were kept up to date too (so the car would have to come back to the UK once a year at least).

It is now on Spanish plates and insured with Linea Directa; they said as long as it is not out of Spain for longer than six months of the year it will be covered.

We were in the UK for 21 weeks this year, so just made the time limit!

Of course, these people also had the inconvenience of not being able to drive home after their bucketful of ale - a pity as it appears that the drink driving laws don't apply to Brits either
Some are getting the message - I've seen an increasing number of rusted-through right hand drive mondeos and escorts sporting shiney new G matriculations here.

I was watching one such heap trying to make a right turn in town the other day. The combination of poor visibility from having the steering on the wrong side, the broken off door mirror and the balancing act with the ciggy in her hand made my waiting-for-the-cherubs coffee more entertaining than normal.

I thought SORN's were still a disc that had to be displayed? Any way, where would they send the fine to if they live in Spain?

I'm not vindictive (normally) but I wish something was done about this farce!!!! The police are simply not interested up here - they are often seen talking to the owners of untaxed (etc.) vehicles.

They may start including debt info on the data base at the border crossings, I had my PP swiped four times on the latest trip to the UK.

OK ... for once and for all, and I have an email from SAGA, this is the policy!!!
There are not exceptions. This is how it is.

Saga are unable to cover vehicles that are only returned to the UK once a year for MOT. In order to insure a vehicle with Saga the following criteria must apply. The vehicle must be UK registered. The policyholders main residence must be in the UK. The vehicle must have UK Tax and MoT. The vehicle cannot be left abroad while the policyholder returns to the UK. The policyholder must be over 50 All drivers must be over 21 and have held a UK drivers license for at least 12 months.

There is not and never has been a disc for SORN. The owner has to make a declaration to DVLA. There must be a registered keeper with an address in the UK and that is where the DVLA will issue the fine.

Where I live the police do take an interest, particularly where the vehicle looks to be unroadworthy.

SAGA are actually even more particular than that. I informed them when I bought the car that it was for export, under the New Means of Transport rules, that I intended to move to Spain permanently, and only needed to insure for the period up until the car was matriculated etc. All fine and dandy until I, thinking I was doing the right thing, rang them to tell them the car was being matriculated the next week, so cover would not be needed thereafter. I still have a home in the UK, had NOT definitively decided to move and told them so, but they withdrew the cover immediately, leaving me stranded in my gestor's office! They said as I had arranged to matriculate, this counted as matriculated, and they should never have issued the cover anyway. So heaven only knows what they would have done had I had to make a claim. But I don't think they would have paid up

You must have had the office junior respond to your email I can think of any number of reasons why this is totally impracticable and so, I am sure, can you. Sickness, breakdown and so on.

An insurance company cannot dictate what you do with your car!

Perhaps it should read "The vehicle will not be insured if it is left abroad without the owner".

If it is securely locked up off road then unless the garage burns down I don't see that it is a problem.
Unless anyone knows differently.

All I am commenting on is the quality of part of the email they sent to you as their policy. It is ambiguous and can be interpreted in several different ways.

Thats all,

Jim
