No one obviously remembers the threads that ran and ran and ran and ran and ran...... anyway.... that ran for weeks and months about this a couple of years ago and a good handful of people made the effort to contact consulates, insurance brokers etc and the general consensus was that no one, and I mean no one, will insure a british registered car that is out of the country for longer than 3 months. They may well say that you are covered to get your trade, but you try claiming on it!

We knew people in Spain with British reg cars and they all said they had insurance and were legal. However at least three of them had their cars impounded....why??? Because their cars were illegal due to having British plates with no British tax or MOT. Yet still, a good friend of ours, whom I though should know better as he is an intelligent person, has his car insured every year...and he is on British plates and has been for at least 5 years. Luckily, for him, he hasn't had to make a claim yet. He won't listen :rolleyes:

Yes providing you have not applied for, and received, "Residencia", you can bring your UK registered vehicle with you when you come to Spain but by law you can only use it for six months in any calendar year in Spain. We can however continue to insure it for as long as you keep it in Spain

Any Non-resident who changes to resident status after six months must either import the car into Spain, which can be expensive and complicated, and re-register onto Spanish plates, or sell it and buy a Spanish registered vehicle.

Took me 5 minutes to find it.

They have the wrong residencia time, it is 3 months, have a look on the Spanish immigration site in Free Beer.

Plus they failed to add that it must be 'street legal' in it's country of origin, ie taxed and MOT'd.

True, if you are referring to the requirement to register on the database of EU foreigners, but under EU law you have up to 6 months to reregister the car after you become resident.

I asked the EU legal service for that information and they replied :-

"Since you are moving to Spain from the UK, you must register your vehicle in Spain as soon as possible after arrival and, at any rate, within six months of moving."

To avoid paying the matriculation tax you have to do it within 30 days.

In this area they now give you an appointment and there you get the green residencia certificate complete with an NIE number.
If they think you have moved over permanently you may also find that the 3 months before going into the police station is included in the 6 months. ;-)

No car insurance that bl**dy annoys me (wherever he / she is) - What if he injures himself, others or god forbid kills someone !! Irresponsible and Selfish !

My brother was in a serious accident with a drunk / not insured IDIOT.. wrote off both cars - no compo for Bro' as this idiot had no money either - I think he was ordered to pay £10 a month (which fizzled out) :thumbdown:
