Visit to Uk
We are having our first visit back to the Uk in 1.5 years. The first since we moved here.
What was it like for others on here who went for their first visit back. On our list of things to do apart from family is charity shops and car boot sales, lots of cheap clothes shopping, food food and food. What do you do apart from see family? The weather had better be dry:fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed: |
Re: Visit to Uk
I ALWAYS have an indian takeaway (IMO they're so much cheaper and nicer in the UK)!!!! I usually go to tescos, sainsburys and our local seafront just to take a look to compare, I go clothes shopping, go out with friends for drinks or a meal and thats about it apart from seeing family! After a day or two, I'm counting the days til I come back to Spain.

Re: Visit to Uk
Don't know, haven't been back yet :p but I should imagine charity shops would be right up there. If you want a decent Indian, check our www.spicentice.com and you'll never have another takeaway again.

Re: Visit to Uk
I go to the cinema having prestocked up on jelly babies, fruit pastilles, american hard gums etc.
Regardless of the film I then scoff the lot & make myself v ill with the sugar rush. Oh, chazzer missions, tescos, m&s reduced stuff, cases of discounted beers & those big bags of assorted McCoys do it for me. I just got my visa bill for a month UK stay over christmas, it was v expensive. |
Re: Visit to Uk
my first visit back I stocked up on clothes & underwear for me & the kids
then didn't go back for 7 more years................. |
Re: Visit to Uk
Stock up on tea bags to take back?
You've avoided the cold weather we had in December, but be warned it's very windy and changeable at the moment. Not really seen any sun for a week now, but maybe you'll bring the sun with you! |

It's got to be a proper English Chippy first stop from the airport. Next day Tesco's and Asda, Pork pie as a snack then later an Indian takeaway.
Great Food is all I miss from the Uk. Really, What else do they have that's good? |

I bring back Twinings Lemon & Ginger teabags and I also look for trousers that I don't have to take 20-30cm off before wearing. |

Most of the food I would miss is available from here without much hassle. We went back a week ago. The weather was shit, the roads like something out of Wacky Races, and way too many people for my liking. Tesco's was good tho.

Well it was. I know it can rain biblically in Spain, but that's it. Wallop! and it's over. The whole week we were in the UK, there was dribs and drabs and it was wet all the time.
i dont think so bill, remember Spain is not the costa del sol. What you are describing with the dribs and drabs all day is Galicia much of the time. Most of Spanish population do not live in the sunny south. |

Do a google on Britains lost identity or read what David Cameron said yesterday. I'm not alone. |

To claim that the UK has nothing good is absolutely ridiculous and shows us more than we need to know about the way you view the world. Oh and DC made comments about militant Islam, if you need me to explain the difference between that and the myth of Britains "lost identity" let me know eh? |

Agree that the UK is better than a lot of countries, but look how bad some of those are!! |

Quote from David Camerons speech
At a security conference in Munich, he argued the UK needed a stronger national identity to prevent people turning to all kinds of extremism. That surely means it's weak? |

No, it just means it isn't so defined. The English don't usually make a lot of fuss about their identity, presumably thru self confidence. The more insecure jingoistic types go in for a lot of flag waving.

It's interesting to read the Spanish take on UK, some good, some bad, but most that I read don't seem that worried about the weather, and comment that people always ask them why they come to UK, given the weather in Spain. (a job, obviously!)They seem to have problems with that. The Spanish don't even seem to have a problem moving to Scandinavia, they are going there in increasing numbers. I was recently reading a recommendation on places to visit in a London forum, and St Paul's always comes out on top, followed by all the other top tourist traps there. They seem to love London parks! Some of them, like this lady, even loves the food here!
And someone that has just lost her job, was given the following advice, They're loving it! ;) If there is one thing I cant stand it the Brits that have moved on and do nothing but slag off the UK, I rekon they must have lived in some god awful places. Isnt it strange most people in the world would rather live in a country where they have social benefits and a comparitively crap climate, than stick it out in their hot and sunny country where such luxuries as care for the havenots does not exist. I admit I would rather have a nice warm climate, that is one of the reasons I came back, but not at the expense of being without any protection in time of need. |

In my experience this is very rare; in fact most foreigners have a very poor opinion of British food, especially if they're based in London. A shame really as decent home cooked fare is to die for, but all they experience is microwaved pub grub and various high street chicken and kebab type take-aways.

They were mostly construction and cleaning firms, butchers and internet cafés, which had registered a complete of 660 staff, of whom 115 had applied for benefits. These include 70 applications for dole money and a number others for maternity pay, totalling greater than half a million euros. Most of the companies had no current activity on record, or the workload was disproportionate to the number of employees. |
