Theres a very good train system that runs all the way down the coast to Gandia, so you can take your pick of those on the coast. Gandia is just about an hours drive or so from Valencia airport, to give you an idea ..... its about 5o minutes on the train

Re: valencia
Thanks that's good to know. I mean the sort of place that has enough facilities whilst retaining its identity as a village or small town. Am travelling over on Thursday to spend a week having a look around the area will be staying in Macastre which looks quite nice if a little far from the coast. I suppose like a lot of other people we want a little too much.

I think you will be surprised what you can get for your money, especially away from the coast.
Most towns have their own website that are full of information about their town, so may be worth researching those.
On the property front Rightmove have an overseas section on their web. Kyero's web site is also pretty good.

Thanks for that I'll check out the local websites. We are looking to spend the winters there initially, what are the seaside towns like out of season?

One of the first years we were there we did a "tour" of some of the cosat side towns North of us between Gandia and Cullera around mid morning to 3 pm. We hardly saw a soul for much of the time, lots of the restaurants and bars were closed and a few of them just looked like ghost towns :-) Those are the smaller places though. Bear in mind that places like Oliva have a "main town" and then they have the beach area. Whilst the main town might be buzzing even in Jan & Feb, the built up area around the beaches were often very very quiet.

Thank you all for your insight and advice. Will be flying out tomorrow and spending a week near Macastre.we've booked a car so will drive around and explore the area. Is it wise to rent before we buy? We have 2 small dogs so may have difficulty renting.

Yes it would be better, because then you can have a good look around over a period of time and get the feel of where you want to live.

There are so many empty properties for rent, doubt your having dogs will prove a drawback
