I am considering a holiday in New England, possibly fly into New York or Boston.
But I would like to return from Toronto.
When I try to find a car hire I keep getting messages like " This station has sold out for the date"
I have tried lots of dates and think maybe they are trying badly to tell me I cannot hire in USA and drop in Canada.

Anyone the wiser?

Drop the car in Buffalo or Detroit it would work out far cheaper.

There used to be a ferry service from Rochester but it went bust, there might be an alternative from Rochester across the water to Toronto though.

The idea is to tour New England and then visit Niagara finishing off in Toronto.
Toronto is only approx 100 miles from Niagara so maybe even use public transport for the Canada travel.

We are still in the early stages of planning so we are open to all ideas
