Default UK to Madrid

Hi all,

First time poster here and I would really appreciate some thoughts from those who have the experience of moving to Spain, mainly with referrals to the best specialists to speak with.

Background

I recently moved to Madrid from the UK with my Spanish partner and young family. My partner has a Spanish passport whilst both kids have UK and Spanish passports. I understand they are ok to just start living here albeit the children are in the process of being registered for access to healthcare (beneficiario de seguridad social) via my partner.

I hold a UK passport and as of 18 months ago an Irish passport, thanks to my grandparents.

As I understand it the key action for me here is the NIE?

Employment

I quit my corporate job in London to come here for the benefit of my partner and children. My job prospects aren’t as good as London but I should shortly have an offer from a company with offices in London and Madrid. The plan is for me to fly to London circa. twice per month for ‘office work’ and the rest of the time working in their Madrid office.

The first thing they have asked me is if I wish to be employed in UK or Spain and that I look into this. I’m presuming better to be employed by the Spanish office under a Spanish contract? Timing may be important though? They want me to start mid September and I have not completed the NIE yet.

Tax matters

Setting aside employment above I think we need some specialist tax advice based on my reading of posts on this forum as:

- We are now renting the house we own (and lived in until recently) in London
- I hold private pensions and ISAs, not with huge sums but not small either
- my partner holds a NHS pension from her time as a nurse in the UK

Is anyone able to recommend a good, user friendly tax specialist either Spain or UK based?

Many thanks

Default Re: UK to Madrid

You might as well burn UK passport and stick to IE one. NO, NIE is just tax number, you need to register residency and get residency card as EU citizen.
If you did research things, you would have know you could get NIE from ES Consulate in London while living there.
Your employment plan will make you tax "resident" in UK & ES. You need to look into double taxation rules.
Has your wife got NT tax code and closed UK tax "residency" ?
Consider making voluntary NI contributions in UK for both of you, to increase UK state pension.
I dont see why you need tax specialist, unless your affairs are more complex then stated above.
You will have to submit tax returns in UK and ES each year. You should have sold UK home before moving in ES, as if you now sell it, you'll be hit by large ES tax.

Sounds like you made move first, then now looking for process details. Should have done it other way around.
