No problem, the whole thing can be confusing, especially if you are getting advice from people who are basically breaking the law ... they may get away with it, but one day it catches up with them and ....

Don't forget, if theyve been here for any amount of time they are quite likely uninsured as their MOTs have expired

This is just a general impression and is no way associated with anyone on this thread or site at all..

But it always seems to be mostly in Spain where people try their arm and drive around in illegal registered vehicles.

Makes my blood boil as I've been hit by someone who was uninsured in Spain and I had to foot my repair bill

I guess people believe what they want to believe and that tends to be from 'arm chair experts' and that famous expat bush telegraph/urban miff syndrome.

The odd thing is most of the owners of these vehicles would never roam around back in the UK with a car in the same situation! I can not work out the logic behind it.. Saving a few euros? what happens if you're caught or in an accident?!?

Seems strange behaviour when most of us have moved to Spain for a less stressful life.

Sorry to thread highjack but i have a 1 year old car which i was hoping to move to spain with, from what i've read here unless i can transport it back to the UK each year for it's MOT then it won't be legal? Is there no way of registering it as a spanish car?

You can re-register your car in Spain. Your British MOT will not be recognised though and you will have to have a Spanish MOT (ITV) this can only be done after you have the lights changed for LHD. The re-registering is a long drawn out process and isn't for the light hearted or easily stressed. Having a Spanish speaker with you would help, you can even pay someone to do it all for you.

Same, the only reason i bought a brand new car was because i was going to keep it for 6 years or so . Guess that plan is out the window. Actually, i get 3 years without having to renew MOT so will be ok for a bit.

Hi Lionda

Do you know if it is expensive to re-register your car?

Yes it is quite expensive, we paid 90 euros for the ITV plus 98 euros for the inspection (they measure the car amongst other things and make out a special report) this is done at the same time as the ITV. The ITV lasts for 2 years, the cost of changing the lights varies according to the model of the car, ours cost about 185 euros for each light then there was the garage charge on top. Car tax is cheaper , we paid 25 euros for 6 months to take us to the end of the year. You are given a number and have to get the plates made up, ours cost 18 euros and they were done in 15 mins.
