Hi Guys,

Does anybody have a UK bank account where you can without the need to go into a branch or phone, can go online and move money to a UK account.

I assume its unlikely as if someone hacked your account getting the money back would be more difficult than a UK > UK Bacs transfer.

I use Natwest and to transfer money abroad I have to go into a branch, I have a Coop too but that entails making a phonecall, Im not keen on the standing order idea as I often forget to check my account, any ideas ?

My experience with UK banks is that:

• They don't seem to know there are other countries
  
• They don't seem to know there are other currencies
  
• They seem to think sending money abroad is an unusual and very "specialised" kind of service requiring many humans to be involved and hefty service charges.

No wonder the independent "foreign transfer" and "prepaid multi-currency debit card" business is big business in the UK, but hardly ever heard of in Europe.

We bank with Lloyds in the UK. Normally we make a monthly transfer through one of the money exchange companies, but recently I realised I had miscalculated and had to transfer some money from the UK to Spain asap (if not sooner). I made a transfer online from my Lloyds account and the money was credited to my Spanish account on the same day. No need to make a phone call or go into the branch, just an online transaction. Dead easy and quick. I can't remember the exchange rate but whatever it was it was worth it for the convenience.

Hi we bank with Halifax in the UK and have no problem in transferring money to our Spanish bank Sabadell on-line. Have just set up a direct debit instruction for a regular money transfer and apparently there is no charge by either bank for this arrangement. Hope this may be of some help to you.

It is what Kath does which is what I want to do, I want to avoid the direct debit / standing order as I am a nightmare with being organised simply the same as the LLoyds offer will be good, I can just go online and transfer say £50 or £500 that day

Presumably you mean Spain.

We have a Santander account (formerly Alliance & Leicester) with no problem transferring to anywhere in Spain - Sabadell, Halifax (now Sabadell) or Banesto (now Santander).

I am thinking of changing a UK account to the Metro bank as it seems, as far as I can tell I can withdraw directly from ATM's abroad without any charges being applied.

Does anyone have any experience of the Metro bank?

The first piece of advice I would give is;

'do not close any UK bank accounts that you have - you never know when you might need them'.

We have a UK Halifax account & here one with BBK (Kutxabank). With Halifax UK you can transfer money to Spain for free IF you have/open a Lloyds Bank International account in Spain.
Up here in Euskadi, Lloyds is nowhere to be seen. The standard online Halifax transfer charge to a non-Lloyds bank costs £9.50 per transaction; so we prefer to use a Currency Dealer such as Moneycorp or Currency Fair.

Bank of Scotland does it online same day transfer, but charges £9.50, for any amount, they will also transfer in any currency. However BoS transfers to any UK bank are free and almost instant.

First Direct, excellent, 90% of the time if transfer is done first thing in the morning it will be in my Sabadell account later the same day.

Just done an online international transfer from my UK LTSB account. Easy peasy, at a good rate. There are cheaper ways, but I was happy to pay £10 charge for the convenience.
