Tell me about it. Got several sites down now. The hosting provider changes the server and the underlying code, and now everything's gone pear shaped. Serves me right for going with a local UK host provider, next time it's the cheapo American GoDaddy I think....

Well got my site back up. Still a little behind now as a consequence on news updates. I can see now why Howard fell ill! Hope he's soon able to get TS showing news updates - there are lots of interesting things happening in Spain currently.

Is that building bridges your website?

It needs tweakiando a bit........just an opinion with my rather average command of Spanish after a quick look. It just does not look that good, somehow it does not seem to read right.

Well, as Dom mentioned earlier, better to get something up, instead of striving for perfection and never actually publishing anything. That said, I do intend to make format changes as the current set-up is not the best. One thing I do insist on is having all articles that are done in Spanish, are either written or translated by native speakers who at the least spent their formative years in Spain. Having said that, and despite the "crisis" it's very difficult to get someone in Spain to do this within a time scale. I may have to recruit a native Spanish speaker from within the London community.
Of course, in the meantime, if Typically Spain gets up and running again, the need to produce a summary of news within Spain will be met already. :fingerscrossed:

I am not talking about perfection, but just a general rule I always thought (I could be wrong, though) that the "Singluar you" is not used in this context.

That is should be in 3rd person, or something like that.

Web sites are normally more informal in Spanish - I've seen plenty of examples of the "tu" form used. Will probably check this with the new recruit. Whether it is puedes or puede or podeis, the message is understood.

I'm writing a weekly news report called 'Business over Tapas'. Anybody want to read this morning's effort?

I know web sites may be "informal" but as the site is about learning and teaching languages, I would have thought that at least the content would be scrutinized more, and it does not really show itself in a good light if the people who run it are not seen to be bothering with a bit of simple but important wording.

The informality of an "iffy" phrase or translation might be OK for a site selling paint or something, but for one promoting language teaching, it is rather sloppy.

Certainly "Profes disponible el jueves" is very bad Spanish, schoolboy errors.

Thanks for your concern - always good to see more people reading the site. Don't worry - all the content in Spanish, whether original articles or translations of those articles, is carried out by native Spanish, and who were schooled in Spain. It would be sloppy indeed to get someone who was schooled in the UK and spent their working life in the UK, to do the translations. As mentioned before the formatting and boilerplate will be modified as the site develops.

But back to news coverage in the absence of TS. This site I recently discovered (apologies if someone already mentioned it) actually seems to do a fairly good job of covering the news headlines, in English.

http://elpais.com/elpais/inenglish.html

Surely this does a far more comprehensive job, be it in English or in Spanish,
be it regional or national.

Apart from pushing it's commercial property interests, Thinkspain is much like the rest of the minor would-be websites, reporting selected second hand and old news from sources other than it's own.

Their motives are obvious, so what are your own, as I do not see much point in all the hassle when much more firsthand up to date information and news is so easily and readily available to everyone elsewhere ?
