Re: Train travel revolution benefits Spain

Just got back today from our trip to Madrid with Iryo. As Pollyanna and San Nico said, we were very happy with the service. On the outward leg from Malaga there were quite a few empty seats so people who wanted to were able to change - luckily this included the couple who were sitting across from us at a table and weren't keen on travelling backwards! Comfortable seats, plenty of leg room and spotlessly clean. We spent just over 10 minutes stuck in a tunnel due to the engineering works on the line and as well as an announcement over the tannoy they sent a message to everyone's mobile to explain the reason for the delay and apologise. We still arrived at Atocha spot on time. The journey back was uneventful and also on time, in fact arrived 5 minutes ahead of schedule. In both directions the journey was blissfully quiet, no crying babies or people bellowing into mobiles.

Iryo put seats for the whole of 2024 on sale last week, some prices are even lower than the €36 we paid for this trip, so if anyone wants to use them it might be a good idea to book early.

A stop in Benidorm would benefit everyone. I used to joke a lot about the stereotypical Benidorm tourist until I explored it a little more. Yes, on one side you have the string vest brigade who get hammered, grab a tattoo and a kebab on their way back to their hotels but there's another side to it, especially in the old town.
We don't need to worry about the string vest brigade exploring other towns as they're only interested in watching the football and getting drunk.
Linking the town with a mainline would allow quicker access to Valencia and Alicante and for the rest of us it opens up a better network further afield. Valencia to Barcelona is an expensive nightmare. It's quicker to take the train to Madrid and then to Barcelona.

There is already a tram link between Alicante Train station and Benidorm, taking about an hour.
