Default Tow bar!

Is it true, that you cannot fit a tow bar to your private motor car?

Hola

There are companies that are licensed to do so as they have to be homologated - if you were to fit one without the correct paperwork then you can be fined

We've had 2 fitted to 2 different cars since being here from 2009. The 1st was to a Renault Modus for which we had to get the paperwork from the ITV testing station (MOT) and the 2nd was to a new car we bought.
As long as you get the required approved paperwork from ITV, I do not see a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I will make some enquiries to ascertain who does it locally to me, and the price!

You cant fit it yourself, as above.

you have to have it fitted by a qualified installer

you can check the price here : https://www.lafuente.eu/enganches (other suppliers / fitters exist, just this would be a good indication of price)

dont be surprised if its 300+ for an old car, or 500+ for a new one...

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I managed to get a quote from a local firm, who will supply, fit and have the necessary paperwork done for 750€.
This for me is too expensive, so I shall not be having one fitted.
Thanks again for everyone's help

You can buy and fit one yourself, that you buy from ebay or amazon or second hand... but it wont pass the ITV without the right paperwork so you´d have to take it off every year..

AND if you get into an accident involving your trailer your insurance would be invalid...
AND if you get stopped while towing a trailer you´d probably get fined...
