Default Tiling a fibreglass pool, possible or not?

Hello,

We have a fibreglass pool which is over 20 years old. There is a leak needing to be repaired around the plug hole (or whatever the bottom draining hole is called) so we have emptied it. To save repainting it every two or three years, we would like to tile the WHOLE thing.

We have heard some builders say this can be done, mosaic straight onto the fibreglass, and others say the whole thing needs to be "plastered" first.

Does anybody here have any experience of tiling a fibreglass pool please?

We have a concrete pool that was sprayed with fibreglass before we bought the property. We had the same questions.

Most pool specialists state that it can NOT be tiled as there may be movement in the fibreglass - even using special adhesive.

If there is any question of doubt, I wouldn't do it in case started to 'pop off'.

We had a couple of minor holes which were easily fixed with a fibreglass repair.

To tile such a pool, the entire lawyer of fibreglass has to come off first - you really shouldn't render over it as the movement could cause the render to crack or simply fall off.

I would not tile a fibreglass pool.
If the leak is at the connection for the drain, tiling would not solve your problem.

I would suggest that your best option is to get a vinyl "liner" fitted. This would extend the life of an old fiberglass pool by 10 to 20 years.

I had a quote for one of these from a specialist pool company in Oliva and the price was 7000€ plus tax !

Given the phaff, it would be better to build a new pool from scratch!

I know someone who tiled a stand alone pool that had a plastic liner in (the steel ring type)
Worked a treat and never leaked for the few years we visited, still there but they no longer live there so cannot comment further.
