To be honest (this is only my view, not taking a pop at anyone) I'd never think of taking my children to live overseas unless I was fluent in the language and culture and they were of an age where they could attend local Schools and become a 'local' themselves, become 'Spanish' or 'German' etc; to do so is short changing the kiddie winks. As is so often the case, mom and dad soak up the new life while the children can struggle in School and certainly are at a big disadvantage with higher education which would be my main worry...what happens when the children hit eighteen and have to return to the UK for uni, a country and culture that by then is not truly 'home' and they to a degree are in a social/cultural limbo.

Valid points, thanks. I suppose it comes down to knowing your own children. We have a very open and honest house where no subject is off limits. We listen to our kids and include them in every stage of every decision - not just this. Our kids and extremely confident and personable. They are the ones pushing us to make a decision, they love the sound of it. I keep advising them that it needs lots of though but they see it as a huge adventure. Thats not to say they havent pointed out their own obstacles. I cant see that they would be in social or cultural limbo if they returned to be honest, with todays technology, flying back regularly to visit friends and family, having their freinds over, I can see there being an issue and I have given it some though and had discussions on this very things with my daughters. I think if my kids were impressionable or timid in any way I wouldnt consider it.

nowadays the education is more needed to ensure a "good job" and if I was lucky enough to be that young I would not want to saddle my kids with the problems this can cause.

but.....if you don't try it when you get to my age you will be sitting there complaining you had never achieved your goals.

work at it, carry out the SWOT Analysis and ensure you have a way out if it does go pear shaped.

My fear is NOT making a move and regretting it later. Here, class sizes are 1 teacher to 34-35 kids. Compare that to most international schools of 20-25 per class at most.

I always have an exit strategy - this is the queen of strategy here :) The fortunate things for us, our business is self reliant and we rent here anyway, we are not buying or selling a business or a house. Should it become clear that Spain was not for us, even after all the investigation we do, it would not be the end of the world (before anyone pounces, this does not mean I am making rash or quick decisions and just thinking, if it doesnt work we can just come back) but we would have the option of coming back and simply renting again and getting the kids back into school, at worst we have had an adventure :) and we will never be wondering, what if? We do have savings, we do have stable income, we do have the ability to come back but we need to look forward and make sure we do the best for us, as a family, that we can.

Thanks everyone.

As I said before, it looks like it will be an International School - I did want to hear everyones thoughts on state schools but the comments seem to echo what I thought.

Im not sure about the 700 euro rent that was mentioned - this seems to be the size and quality of houses on offer http://www.thinkspain.com/spanish-property/1335250 for 450 euro - I think thats a great price and seems to be the norm for properties on all the sites we have seen - am I looking in the wrong place? Even at 700 euros though this is still so much less than in the uk.

I am more than willing to make compromises when moving - my lovely (but obscene and un needed) 6 bed detached with twin garage will gladly be changed for a 3 bed house in Spain with what I feel would be a better life for our family - we seem to spend a lot on a house JUST to have a nice big house but there must be more to life than that. I haven't actually heard anyone say anything majorly negative about moving to Spain and can only go on feedback from our friends who are already there and various stories on the forums - that it can be better for us.

For work we need a desk and computer so space is not an issue - I dont see how a family of four wouldnt be able to live comfortably in a 3 bed house.

We pay over £1200 just now just for rent, tax and insurance, then another £150 pcm for gas and elec, then broadband, phone, gardner - it all adds up! and for a bit more than this in Spain I would get rent AND an INternational school - which from what I can tell so far, are highly recommended. IN Scotland we could never afford a private school.

More specifically, can anyone pinpoint highly ex-pat populated (and recommended) areas in Murcia/Valencia. It would certainly help narrow down our choices. We are looking for a good amount of ex-pats, with good local amenities and not too far from an INternational School and a beach close by would be nice :) - I don't ask for much!

I am sure there will be areas that pop into peoples minds and would love to hear suggestions so I can do some more research

Many thanks so far for all the feedback guys

Cheers

Lesley

If as you stated it is only information about the ideal area for you all to live that you want, do you realise that nearly every poster lives in a different place and will usually recommend their own area, as it will be what they know.

How this will help you decide on the "where"I have no idea.

As I have already said, I am looking for general info on where the most popular ex-pat areas are - what is confusing about this request? I would have though it common sense. If someone goes to the effort of posting here recommending where they live, whats wrong with that? It will help, (we are not all alike and only I can say what would be helpful to me) no one would recommend an area if it was not good - I can then ask questions. This is very bizarre that you bring this up - first I have to defend my decisions now I have to defend the questions I ask - I am only on here for help - exactly what an online community is for as far as I was aware.

I am looking for personal input - if someone lives in a highly ex pat populated area near an international school, then they can let me know etc, I might then be able to get info on amenities, broadband - many other things - it will certainly help to get this personal input. I wonder if we can keep all the rest of the comments at bay and maybe just stick to the topic?

It would be great to hear from anyone with kids currently in an INternational School in Murcia / Alicante etc

As I mentioned in a previous post, at this time, I am particlularly keen to know of any areas around El Limonar International School at El Palmar.

Cheers

The above 2 questions should have been the topic.

I would not recommend my area to Lesley because there is a lack of Brits and she has already stated that she wants to live where there a lot of Brits. I have not spoken to a Brit for 18 months so that makes it very obvious that they are very, very thin on the ground here.

Well TBH if all you needed was the expat areas, which I would say CDS and C.Blanca, you did confuse the issue by giving us a lot of other info as to what rent you pay, what house you rent, info on gardner etc, employment and cost of living,so I feel that as you brought the subject up comments on the other aspects, (not just location) can be commented on.

Re: Thinking of moving to spain and have some questions.

I gave a brief intro to me, so people knew a bit about us, I then answered questions asked of me (or more apt, I responded to others telling me what I should and shouldnt be doing :))

My main questions are, and always have been, location and schooling, cost of living as well as to be made aware of extra taxes etc that may not be widely known.

Schooling was covered and we have decided on International school which was what I had been veering towards, this leaves location (which will now be largely based around the International schools of course) and again, asking for any info that might not be widely known.

I did not want to go into my particulars but people keep making assumptions for some reason and putting words or reasons in my mouth, for some reason, so I had to clarify and go into our personal circumstances. It got slightly off topic for that reason.

Hopefully now we can keep to the topic at hand.

Ie :

Recommendations on expat areas / urbs close to International Schools in Murcia and Alicante areas
Any extra / hidden costs or issues that we might not be aware of

Looking forward to any more recommendations etc

Many thanks and best regards

Lesley

funny that Rosemary, when we rented this house the BH's workmates all said "OOO no, you won't meet a single Brit out there in the olive groves" "when you come in you will be speaking uncouth Spanish like they do"

this lunchtime I went in a bar for a drink and met 4 Brits who had just completed a Spanish lesson, then another 3 Brits came in.

last week I met 7 Brits outside a bar and we all shared a table.

No Brits ??

We seek them here we seem them there but the Brits get everywhere !!

Just to make it clear, both of you will need to pay social security from the first month you are in Spain, if you are working from Spain. This will be at least 520 euros per month. There is no option to wait 2 years so make sure you include it in your budget

As for international school. The problem is when the kids are teenagers they have very few reference points. They cant even understand the children they are surrounded by, nevermind the culture, so the only thing they know is their immediate classmates and whatever they watch on TV. OK some kids are like that anyway, but it is a bit sad to think that your children are going to grow up in a country and end up actually knowing very little about it

Of course, some international schools are better than others. If it was me, I'd make sure they get taught Spanish sociales and language as well as the English subjects. And that a good proportion of the children are Spanish

Thanks - as discussed previously we are aware of the ss - we never suggested waiting 2 years.

I know my kids and I have a more open view on what kids need and are capable of and I do not find broadending my childrens horizons to be sad in any way.

British International schools teach the english curriculum as well as spanish and some classes such as music and pe also in spanish - we have researched.

Moving on, we have had some telephone chats etc today and have narrowed down to 2 schools - we are hoping that anyone in these areas may have some specific recommendations on areas to do a property seach, i'd like to narrow it down before the first of our visits.

These are the schools, we are looking to stay within 10-15km of either:

British School of Alicante
Glorieta del Reino Unido 5
Alicante 03008
Spain

or

El Limonar International School - Murcia
Colonia Buenavista, s/n, 30120, Spain

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Lesley

You won't be broadening your childrens' horizons because you will be living among other British people in the Sun, not Spain. You will be doing the exact opposite. Giving them a very narrow view of the world

The kids I've met from the international schools have all longed to go to the UK and have not been in the least bit interested in Spain. That probably tells you all you need to know.

Anyhow, I hope you get the info you've asked for

Please don't try and tell me what I will and will not be doing to my children, how dare you. I have never come across such arrogance. You do not know me or my children and therefore you cannot begin to know how they will cope or what we will do as parents. This is the 3rd or 4th time on this thread others have made judgments whereas all I asked for was factual advice. I pity your limited view on things and would appreciate it if you don't have any constructive info then please don't post on this.

If I had known this is what to expect on this forum then I probably would have looked elsewhere. I'm only glad I got some kind and good info from others on this thread. I will cross my fingers that your kind of input is not representative of this forum to any great degree.

I am sorry if my reply offends anyone on here, this is not my intention at all. I came for advice, not to be told what I will be doing to my childrens horizons etc

Many thanks to everyone else who has helpfully contributed

Lesley
