Not a bad article, but the below is fundamentally wrong:
"Reyna from UPTA also sees problems with the €250 per month flat fee. "This isn't much money for an older person who is well established in their position," he told The Local.
"On the other hand, for a young person just starting out, this can be a lot of money."
Reyna would prefer, instead, to see a sliding scale where people earning more pay more into the system"
There is no such thing as a EUR250 flat fee. This is the minimum monthly social security payment and is equivalent to what a full time employee earning EUR800 per month would be paying into the system. This would only give you a very low state pension. You can choose to pay more into the system, up to EUR750 per month.
That way, when you retire you will get a very high pension, currently around EUR2,500 per month. Actually this is something that autonomos over 50 should think carefully about

To be honest, you cannot trust the returns from a private pension either, or the returns from any other investment, property or savings. We are living in uncertain times.

Don't forget that by paying your €250 you also get entitlement to the Spanish health system, including any dependents.
You would struggle to beat that with a private health policy.

That would mean that you pay in 135k and if you only live for 10 years after retirment you would collect 300k in pension. Impossible in any country.

How much pension you receive is calculated based on your contributions in the last 15 years before retiring, thats why it would be a very good option to pay the maximum contribution (750 euros per month) during those years
