I was surprised to see on the news, an interview with the ceo of Allianz, talking about expats, including full time students, resident in Spain using their EHIC cards as if it is normal practice and acceptable.
Maybe it is for some , but did they really not know that most expats are on the Spanish NHS or private insurance?
If that's what a head of one of the main firms thinks, what does the general population think?

I have not found one Spanish person who knows that the UK pay a set amount for every pensioner receiving health care in Spain.

The Ladies in my local pharmacy know, and they know about the variable cap depending on earnings triggered by income tax, cos I hit mine every month.

When we went for residencia earlier this year we were told by the functionario at ministerio de extranyaria that the UK government do not contribute towards health care for british ex pats even though we provided out "health card" If they don't know, it is hardly surprising that the ordinary people havn't a clue.
