Default TEMPORARY (TRANSIT) CAR NUMBER PLATES

Hi, I am hoping someone may have some information that could help....
I am looking to purchase a French registered vehicle from my cousin who has recently moved back to the UK.
It is currently being imported and if I purchase I will then wish to drive it to Spain to have it registered there and put on Spanish number plates. In order to be able to insure the vehicle for the journey to Spain, my current Spanish insurance company advises I need to get temporary Spanish number plates to insure it with them.
How easy is it to do this and what paperwork would be required please?

Wouldn't it be easier for your cousin to drive it back to France and put you on his French insurance policy as a named driver (I'm not even sure that that is necessary). Then you can drive it to Spain, transfer ownership there and register it in Spain.

Thanks Novocastrian but the French insurance on the vehicle is now cancelled since they now live in UK. I know I will not be able to insure it with a UK insurance company but thought only option was to go with my Spanish insurer if I can get transit plates.

Thanks Spainrico but I had a look on dgt site already and it does not give anything specific about temporary number plates or how to obtain them.
