taxi

hi im coming to spain for a break with my family at the end of august. i last came out a year ago due to being unemployed for 6 months, i have recently been told that prices of everything have shot up in recent months. does anyone know how much it would cost for a taxi from alicante airport to dehesa de campoamor? i did have a number for a man with a van but he wont reply to me and i think that this is because of the crack down on airport runs. i dont want to hire a car for £180 when im only going to use it for the airport. i would be greatfull for any help.

Re: taxi

Can we get rid of this ridiculous notion that prices in Spain have shot through the roof? The UK economy collapsed so the British blame the nasty Spanish for pushing up their prices, conveniently forgetting that their OWN currency tumbled almost to the point of parity. As far as am concerned, aside from inflation (which affects income as well), nothing has changed. A caña in my local costs roughly the same price as it did two years ago. In fact, my weekly shopping costs slightly LESS these days. Yes, tourists would appear to suffer because of the exchange rate but that has nothing to do with the Spanish. They should look at blaming their own government instead.

WELL SAID
If people are complaining about the "cost", for the most part it is because people were making money on an exchange rate.
If that was a reason to make for an easier life it is nothing more than a risk..

Gambling.

John C

so does my weekly shopping

& I pay less rent for a bigger, better apartment in the same area than I did 6 years ago!

I saw on the (spanish) news a couple of days ago that the cost of living has been falling for a few months now - didn't pay enough attention to give you the figures - but it would bear out my experience

Re: taxi

I know that the cost of a taxi from Alicante airport to Los Montesinos is around 55 Euros, so it would be more than that to Campoamor.

On the subject of prices going up, I know that supermarket prices have come down, but utilities like water and electric have shot up over the past year.

In answer to the cost of a Taxi. They have never been that cheap and if you are looking at 70+ ,each way, then a car may be cheaper.
Although I saw on the news that there is a shortage of hire cars in spain due to cutbacks.

I wasn't intending to have a go at you personally and I apologise if it came across that way. ¡Lo siento mucho!

If you listened to some people, you would expect to arrive in Spain and find it to be as expensive as Tokyo or Monaco. The perception is purely exchange based and effects UK tourists and those who have a Sterling-based income, such as a pension. To these unfortunates, a caña that might have cost the equivalent of 80 pence last summer probably costs just over £1.00 this year. Or a decent lunch that once cost £5.50 now works out at nearly £7.00. However, to me and other people who earn an income in Spain, the costs really haven't changed that much. And, as I said earlier, some have actually fallen. Admittedly some people have been affected by a recent rise in utility bills (I don't appear to have done so, not excessively anyway, so maybe I've been lucky) but I still maintain that on the whole prices are no higher than they were a year ago. Or even two years ago.

As for the price of rental cars; there is obvious evidence that prices have been hiked this summer to compensate for a lesser numbers of tourists. To remain in business, these people still have to maintain and update their fleet irrespective of the economy and unfortunately this seems to have resulted higher rental prices. Yet there are still good deals to discover if you dig a little deeper ...

Not a lesser number of tourists, more a lesser number of cars available, so supply and demand forces the price up in some carhire places.
Remember what service you got this year when you think about hiring next year.

Child seats and booster seats for the bigger kids and in the back only.
You don`t need the paper part usually.

Sounds like you will be hiring a car then!
Try to get it full to full for the fuel
Yes you will need both parts of your licence to be safe

Whoops, just saw JDR's reply. Best to be safe though

Yeah, I think the hire companies aren`t too worried, but you might get a Guardia that knows about it. :-))

Re: taxi

To be honest (or, dishonest, I suppose), you've got a taxi journey of around 80 Euros, which is expensive, especially if it has to be doubled for the return journey; and there are alternatives. I don't know your area very well, but the free newspapers covering the Costa Blanca still have 'illegal' taxi numbers, although it would be far better to employ a local and recommended one for your area. Can't you phone a neighbour to give you a safe number?

hi thanks for posts, i am thinking of getting a taxi and then finding a cheaper alternative on the return trip. we would phone a neigbour but have lost the number. a local english bar {las brisas} had numbers on the notice board but we have lost these numbers too. ive looked on the net for the bars phone number but with no success.

honestly, it's not the spanish ones you need to worry about - at least they are legal & insured - that's why they cost more

it's the cowboy brits with no insurance to take paying passengers who you should be concerned about - that's why they are cheap

(there are probably cowboy germans, dutch, french too - but you sound like you'd be happier with a brit)

Nothing cocky about my info mate, just experience of living here. ;-))
If you are referring to me, do you also think it is good to risk your family to save a couple of €`s ?
Do you do airport runs yourself ?

Well it´s the manner of your replies and not just this one. We all have many years of experience ; )

1) What do you classify as the greatest risk?
2) Very rarely.
3) Not always. (if you are going to a small town it may or may not appear on a list)

1, Well luvvy, the greatest risk is the Brit with his un-licenced, un-insured, probably unroadworthy car. Which may also be prone to having it`s tyres slashed or getting the poo poo kicked out of it and sometimes even set alight by the taxi drivers.

2, If you take money from the passengers you will be breaking the law.

3, All those nasty taxi drivers that will rip you off as soon as look at you cos you are a foreigner, happen to carry a list of their fares in the cab on a sheet of card covered in a lovely plastic and if you ask them they will show you.

There, was that manner of reply more comfy for you, although it was the same message, or should I of said "yeah get in the dodgy taxi and save a few bob :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed: " ?

That´s more like it ducky.;)

Apart from the 3rd point. Yes they carry a plastic sheet with all the tariiffs on. However, if you are doing a longer run, the town may not appear on the list and the driver could theoretically overcharge.

There are still rip-off taxis around. Spanish friends from Madrid been ripped off or perhaps "overcharged" would be better.
In Sevilla or Madrid, going the long route is not unusual. I´ve heard countless stories.

Having done a lot of travelling with my job I can ensure you that Spanish taxis are one of the better examples I've come across although definitely not perfect. I've been ripped off or taken the long route in London, Oslo, Amsterdam, Brussels and Madrid.

If you really want to be ripped off or injured then choose one of the unlicensed British cabs in Spain, that will definitely increase your chances.

probably all over the world.

I´m just speaking from personal experience. I have caught taxis with English friends and been taken the long route, only when I pipe up in Spanish and ask them where they are going ( I am bilingual)do they suddenly seem to wake up...

My point is that many taxi drivers in Spain, and yes London, Paris, New York and Outer Mongolia should in general not be trusted.

Thank you for your thoughts, but my head is far from my arse.

My posts 13-15-17-23-26-28 were ok then, it was just the truth in post 20 that got up your nose a bit then ?

Seriously, be sympathetic yourself and think about the consequences before going in an illegal taxi, for your family if not your self.

I agree, plus it affects hard working Spanish drivers too. They have had to purchase permits and get the vehicles checked run thought hoops and god knows what else to keep in business.
