Success Stories
#1
Are there any success stories out there i.e people who have moved to Spain and made a good income, Business etc? We seem to hear a lot of negative stories but as well realistic of people having to go home as they could not earn a living but there are obviously a lot of Brits who are successful and live there for many years. If you are not too busy running your business would be nice to hear how you did it.

we both have time to post here, me more than you it seems, but that would also imply that we are obviously not in the sucessful group then wouldn´t it, helenp ??
perhaps the ones that do have time in their busy schedules might honor us with their presence long enough that they might outline their stories so we can all see where we are going wrong ?
and calum141, i only posted what i did because that is what was asked for. if you dont like what i write, dont read it. spain is obviously your idea of heaven, different people have different opinions.

now wheres all these sucess stories?

We are in our third year and loving it, learning the language go to local christening's and are asked by the neighbours to attend their private fiesta's. Life is less stressful and far cheaper. We pay in cents for fuel compared to UK who pay at least a third more.
We have many Spanish friends and a smattering of expats (very small expat community here)Absolutely no thoughts of returning to the UK.
We do not work as we have been lucky enough to sell our house in UK for na excellent profit having bought it 25 years ago, but the expats hyere that need to work are finding it and earning enough to live, all of whom say life is better here.
As jdr's post so succinctly put it, "suns out". By the way we are not inland cave dwellers, before someone comes back with that one, we own a large typical spanish house and have sea views one way with mountains around us.

Thank you for your reply I think my reasons for wanting to go to Spain are all of the above do not want to be a millionaire but want to make some money so I can stay there. Hear a lot of stories of people not succeeding so nice to hear some do it is encouraging. Husband has signed up for redundancy and house will be on market next week so we are off asap have got nothing to lose. By the way you live near Almeria I believe, we are looking to move around Granada area what is Baza like never been but property seems quite reasonable there.

Hi Helen
Sorry do not know Baza, we are just inside Granada at the eastern end. Property prices are rising but still much cheaper than down CDS etc.
Good luck in your search

I live in the Costa de la Luz and pay 98.5 cents for Diesel and about 1.05€ for petrol (the premium stuff costing 1.18€) which if converting from pounds to euros is of course much cheaper than the UK. The average wage in the UK is apparently 18,000 pounds per annum and as I live and work here I can guarantee that here it is at least a third less (irrespective of the cheaper cost of living), therefore, using that calculation is fuel not dearer here than it is in the UK ???

I consider myself a 'success story'.
I started my own plumbing business (yes i am quailfied) and not because i had to . I was approached by the father of one of the boys in the village who wanted a trade, but would have had to leave home to do an apprenticeship. Another two are starting their apprenticeships with me after the end of the school term (1 boy-1girl).
I think if you are coming to Spain looking for work then having a skill that is NEEDED goes a long way to furthering your ends. Not necessarily for starting your own business-but in finding employment.
Coming on 'spec' can cause a lot of disappointment. A lot of work (especially on the coast) IS seasonal and there is a lot of competition for any jobs going.
